Earlier today, February 23, Sharon Cuneta posted on Facebook the screen shot of a report from this site, the Philippine Entertainment Portal.
The screenshot was of a PEP article saying that Sharon and former husband Gabby Concepcion had a lunch meeting in Makati yesterday afternoon, February 22, with Star Cinema boss Malou Santos.
In her Facebook statement, Sharon made what she called a "major correction." She said the Star Cinema executive, or any other bigwig from its parent television company, was not present at the lunch.
The Megastar said, however, that she and Gabby did have lunch together, but that its "details are under wraps."
Here is Sharon's post:
WHAT WENT ON AT THE MEETING? Going back to our sources, we learned that Sharon is right: Malou Santos did not, in fact, appear at the lunch meeting between her with Gabby.
The same sources confirmed, however, that the meeting was brokered by the Star Cinema executive herself, and that she was initially supposed to have joined the two stars.
But for reasons still unclear, Malou Santos did not show up at the lunch she had set up.
Our sources were clear about this, though: Sharon and Gabby, long estranged, looked comfortable lunching with each other.
Their guess is that this could be the offshoot of the two former real-and-reel couple working together recently on a McDonald's TV commercial.
Their TVC went viral, in fact, making headlines on various online news sites. The Sharon-Gabby fans had certainly made their presence felt.
Indeed, there has been a clamor from Gabby-Sharon fans for the two to headline a reunion movie ever since Gabby returned home to the Philippines in 2008, after 13 years of living in the U.S.
Then in 2017, a movie deal starring Sharon and Gabby was supposed to have been struck, and that its producer would be ABS-CBN's film arm, Star Cinema.
BACKSTORY OF SHELVED MOVIE. The movie never happened—and, of course, stories circulated as to why.
One story is that Gabby had demanded a talent fee so high—reports have it hovering in the P10 million bracket—that it would have upended the business model for Star Cinema movies.
The norm in the film industry is that a movie has to earn three times more than the money it takes to make it. This is because only one-third of a movie's net income goes back to the producer, with the other two thirds going to theater owners and to taxes.
Star Cinema always likes to buy low and sell high, so to speak. And a P10-million fee for one star alone would be buying real high.
Gabby, it was said, was pricing himself out of the movie. It was also said that this was distressing Sharon.
Another story is that the 2017 Sharon-Gabby reunion movie fell through because Gabby was, in fact, not interested in doing a project with ABS-CBN.
He was interested in a reunion movie with his ex-wife, but he was not interested in a Kapamilya project.
A movie star PEP spoke to intimated that Gabby was very unhappy with the Kapamilya network for leaving him hanging around without a project for some time.
It was GMA-7 that gave Gabby back-to-back TV projects: the now-defunct prime-time series Because of You, and the still-ongoing afternoon series Ika-6 Na Utos.
With both TV shows rating well (Ika-6 Na Utos has consistently left the competition behind), GMA-7 has made Gabby prime property again.
By the time the Gabby-Sharon reunion movie was offered in 2017, Gabby was not only not interested, he felt it wasn't right to accept it.
Gabby believed that signing on for a movie to be produced by ABS-CBN's Star Cinema would be disrespectful to GMA-7.
He was, after all, in the middle of a highly popular Kapuso teleserye that was airing six times a week and, therefore, demanded much of its actors in taping days and hours.
His movie star friend put it this way to PEP: Was he to drop everything for a network that had abandoned him when he needed work?
Through his agent, Gabby released his official statement on April 6, 2017. It said that he could not do a reunion movie with Sharon because of prior commitments and a tight schedule.
On July 13, 2017, Sharon wanted it clarified in PEP that she did not cause the "cancellation" of the project with Gabby.
By September 12, 2017, in an interview with PEP and other entertainment reporters, Gabby made his own clarification: he was open to doing a movie with Sharon.
At this time Gabby gave two reasons for begging off from the reunion project: lack of solid material for the movie and his commitment to GMA-7.
SHAGAB MOVIE FOR 2018? With Sharon and Gabby's recent "Kumusta Ka" TVC garnering millions of views on Youtube, the two stars have been fielding requests for them to revive their love team on the big screen.
Well, the timing may be right: the two have, in Sharon's words, a "renewed friendship."
So was the agenda for yesterday's lunch meeting a reunion movie in the works?
Both Sharon and Gabby are still keeping things "under wraps."
But PEP sources say that Star Cinema has reserved a July 11, 2018 theater playdate for a Sharon-Cuneta starrer.
Whether Sharon is co-headlining it with Gabby or not remains to be seen.
