Ex-couple Aiko Melendez and Aga Muhlach reunited at the May Minamahal digital restoration special screening held at Rockwell Powerplant Mall.
"I am so, so happy and excited to watch our movie again after 25 years. Mapapalabas muli, at hindi lang [kami] ang makakanood, kundi ang next generation, like yung anak ko na si Andre," Aiko said about her son with Jomari Yllana.
When PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) asked about her fondest memory when they filmed it, Aiko said:
"Well, dahil sa movie na 'to, nagkaroon ako ng first boyfriend. Siya [Aga] yung first boyfriend ko dahil sa movie na 'to."
She added that it was both easy and difficult to work with a real-life boyfriend in making the movie. "It was hard and easy. It's easier 'pag okay kami, 'pag masaya. But when we're fighting, deadmahan kami, hindi talaga kami nag-uusap.
"And marami kaming tampuhan sa set. So minsan talaga si Direk Joey, nanloloko sa aming dalawa. E, siyempre ako, 18 years old lang ako nun, so at that time, ang tingin ko sa love nun, pa-tweetums lang, di ba?"
When asked to remember the most memorable scene she had with Aga in the film, Aiko answered that it was when she had to punch him, because she was carried away by what was happening in real life.
She said, "Yung sinapak ko siya. Yung confrontation scene namin. Very memorable talaga sa akin yun kasi nag-aaway talaga kami in real life. So, talagang yung away namin dun, totohanan."
Aiko also believes that the younger generation can still relate to and appreciate the romance that May Minamahal offers.
"Yung story talaga nakaka-in love, kaya maraming sambayanang Pilipino ang na-in love sa movie na 'to, because dito, makikita niyo talaga 'yung napaka-natural.
Kung ano yung nangyayari sa everyday life, makaka-relate kayo," she said.
Were there times when she got carried away?
"Nadadala. Makikita nila dito, binugbog ko siya. Makikita nila when we were fighting."
Is Aiko Melendez open to doing a reunion movie with her former boyfriend Aga Muhlach?
"Paging Star Cinema. Ito na po. Nandito na ang excitement para sa teamup namin," said Aiko with a smile.
"I remember the feeling of coming to the set excited. Yung [feeling na] gusto kong makasama si Aiko, nung nakita ko nga ulit yung movie ngayon, nakita ko yung itsura ni Aiko, sabi ko, 'My god, wow, ang galing-galing ni Aiko,'" said Aga about his ex-girlfriend Aiko.
Aga said that May Minamahal, his film with Aiko, tackles: "Family, love. It's always the same. No matter what, it's always the same feeling. When you get hurt, you get hurt. When it's pain, it's pain."
Jose Javier Reyes, nicknamed Joey, served as the writer and director of May Minamahal, which is the first romance film produced by Star Cinema. It was released in 1993,the year Star Cinema was established.
In one scene, Aga's character Carlitos had to fetch his sister Trina (Agot Isidro) because her car was wrecked by an accident. Trina had to wait for hours because mobile phones were not as prevalent back then.
Aga recalled, "Parang yung telepono na yun, yung kotse na nasira, maghihintay ka talaga kasi walang communication. So, patience. There was a lot of patience before."
According to ABS-CBN Film Archive and Restoration head Leo Katigbak (right), the next movie to be restored is the 1992 movie Ikaw Pa Lang ang Minahal.
Richard Gomez and Maricel Soriano star in this film directed by Carlitos Siguion-Reyna.
