Liza Soberano expressed her gratitude to Angel Locsin for defending her against those belittling her capabilities in portraying the new Darna.
In the past, Angel reprimanded netizens who said derogatory remarks about Liza when she was picked to replace her in the upcoming Darna movie.
"I’m blessed to have her defend me from bashers," Liza told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) in an exclusive email interview facilitated by Modess.
"It's rare to find people in the industry who genuinely care for each other. She’s one of the reasons why I want to do so well because I want to make her proud."
The ABS-CBN actress also reacted to those doubting her ability to play the Pinay superheroine.
Liza admitted, "I don’t really get offended when people say I’m the least athletic Darna ‘cause I know it’s not true. Mahinhin po siguro but I used to be very athletic when I was younger and I know that when I put my mind to something I make it happen."
The 20-year-old actress also opened up about her fears of doing a movie that is not a LizQuen project. For the first time in her career, she is doing a film without her perennial love team partner Enrique Gil.

Here are Liza's answers to questions about portraying Darna:
What is the biggest sacrifice that you did for Darna?
Liza: "Bad eating habits. I wouldn’t really call it a sacrifice, because prior to Darna, I really wanted to practice eating clean, also because I know it’s what’s best for me."
Have you started doing harness work? Can you describe how hard it is?
Liza: "I haven’t done any harness work for Darna YET, but I did get to try it for my current TV show and in my Modess TVC. It is a bit tricky, but once you get the hang of it, I guess it should become easier."
How many hours a day do you dedicate to gym time and preparing physically for the role? Can you describe your diet for Darna?
Liza: "On days when I’m not shooting, I train for about 3-4 hours, but on days when I do have work, I train for 2 hours max. My diet is low carb high protein. I eat mostly seafood and greens. Sundays are my cheat days, but that doesn’t mean I go all out. I choose a cheat meal the rest is clean."
How did you feel when it was announced that Enrique Gil would not be part of Darna? Did that increase the pressure on your part and how did you handle it?
Liza: "I was a bit nervous when I found out about it. It made me feel the pressure even more. I guess ‘cause I got so comfortable working with Quen and I got used to the feeling of having someone to share the pressure with. Now this is the first time in years that I’m doing a project outside our love team, but he always assures me of my capability as an actress and I have a great team who always cheers me on."
What did Angel Locsin tell you about playing Darna? How do you feel that she constantly defends you against bashers on social media?
Liza: "Ate Angel has always been so supportive of me. I expressed to her how nervous I was about the role and how I feel like I’m not capable of living up to the expectations. She told me that she knows I can do it, and that she always believed that I could be the next Darna. I’m blessed to have her defend me from bashers, it’s rare to find people in the industry who genuinely care for each other. She’s one of the reasons why I want to do so well because I want to make her proud."
