A few days ago, PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) had a chance to talk with director Rico Ilarde regarding his upcoming film Villa Estrella. This horror film is scheduled to premiere on July 1, 2009.
This marks the first time that Direk Rico will be helming a mainstream project after working on independent productions like Sa Ilalim ng Cogon. Also a horror film, it gained critical acclaim in international film festivals.
This Star Cinema film was shot in an old resthouse located in Tanay, Rizal. Direk Rico tells PEP, "Villa Estrella is about hungry ghosts na gustong guluhin ang mga taong pumunta doon."
The film centers on Shaina Magdayao who plays a girl named Anna. Her character is often bothered by violent, recurring nightmares but she does not know what they mean.
Her ex-boyfriend Alex (played by Jake Cuenca) brought Anna to Villa Estrella. Mysterious events start to occur in the resort and Anna begins to realize that she has a deep connection to this haunted place.
Geoff Eigenmann forms a love triangle with Jake and Shaina in this film. His character named Dennis is the new boyfriend of Anna.
Playing a key role in the film is Maja Salvador. She plays Giselle, the daughter of one of the caretakers of Villa Estrella. Her younger sister named Jennifer (played by Celine Lim) is the little child sucked into a swimming pool, as shown by the film's trailer.
John Estrada is cast in the film as the alcoholic father of Anna. Other cast members include Ronnie Lazaro and Rubirubi, both of whom play caretakers of Villa Estrella.
SHAINA'S MYSTERIOUS ACCIDENT. Direk Rico was puzzled by one incident that took place while they were shooting Villa Estrella.
He narrated that they had to stop shooting when Shaina Magdayao had an accident on the set.
"Shaina's leg went through a rotten floorboard. Nasugatan yung leg niya at may wound talaga. May scrape siya so we had to stop shooting. She couldn't move her right leg so dinala siya sa hospital. Natakot nga kami kasi baka magkaroon ng scar."
"Freaky lang ang nangyari sa kanya. Weird kasi ang daming tao na naunang dumaan doon na mas mabigat pero hindi naman bumigay. May crew kami na may dala-dala pang mabibigat na equipment pero hindi naman lumusot ang paa sa floorboard," explains Direk Rico.
Watch Villa Estrella when it opens in cinemas nationwide starting July 1, 2009.
