33rd Gawad Urian nominees unveiled

Competing for Best Film in the 33rd Gawad Urian Awards are the following films (from upper left, clockwise) Lola, Kinatay, Last Supper No. 3, Himpapawid, Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe, Colorum, Bakal Boys, and Engkwentro. Completing the list are the films (not in photo) The Arrival and Hospital Boat.

The Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (MPP) had to go over some 50 films released last year to come up with their list of nominees for the 33rd Gawad Urian. This year’s awarding ceremony will take place on April 29 at the UP Cine Adarna.

The group has chosen to give the Natatanging Gawad Urian to Armida Siguion-Reyna, the singer-actress who previously headed the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board.

Internationally recognized filmmakers are competing for this year’s Gawad Urian. Brillante Mendoza has two films that earned multiple nominations in this year’s edition. The film that earned for him the Cannes Best Film director award, Kinatay, garnered 11 nominations while his film that became a surprise entry to the 66th Venice Film Festival, Lola, garnered 9 nods. Both films are in the running for Best Film in the Urian.

Palme d’Or winner Raymond Red’s Himpapawid garnered 10 nominations while Erik Matti’s The Arrival has earned 8 nominations. 22-year-old Pepe Diokno’s debut film Engkwentro has 7 nominations. This 2009 Cinemalaya entry previously won the Lion of the Future award and the Orizzonti prize during the 66th Venice Film Fest.

Mainstream actors and actresses are also pitted against stars of independent productions this year. For the Best Actor category, John Lloyd Cruz of In My Life will compete against GMA-7 actor Alfred Vargas who was part of the Cinemalaya entry Colorum. The MPP will also have to choose among the performances of Coco Martin (Kinatay); Felix Roco (Engkwentro), Allen Dizon (Dukot); Lou Veloso (Colorum); Jacky Woo (Walang Hanggang Paalam); and Joey Paras (Last Supper No. 3). First time actor Raul Arellano is also nominated for the Raymond Red film Himpapawid as well as Dwight Gaston for Erik Matti’s The Arrival.

Vilma Santos of In My Life leads the nominees for Best Actress. She is competing against Irma Adlawan (Ang Panggagahasa kay Fe); Janice de Belen (Last Viewing); Iza Calzado (Dukot); Rustica Carpio (Lola); Eugene Domingo (Kimmy Dora); Anita Linda (Lola); Che Ramos (Mangatyanan); Rosanna Roces (Wanted Border); and Tessie Tomas (Sanglaan).
