Paulo Avelino believes "singing brings out emotions that would help you be a better actor.”

Gawan Urian-winning actor Paulo Avelino finds a similarity in acting and singing: “I think they’re similar on some ways because like acting, singing also brings out emotions that would help you be a better actor.” The Walang Hanggan star releases his self-titled album this month with the carrier single “When She Cries.”

A hunky heartthrob actor who side-tracks into singing usually earns the disapproval of the public. But Paulo Avelino already knows that.

At the press conference held September 2 at the Universal Towers in Quezon City, the Walang Hanggang actor said that he has already accepted the criticisms being flung at him.

His self-titled album’s carrier single “When She Cries” was released in August via the online music portal Hand-in-hand with the encouraging comments about his sudden venture into singing came the negative remarks.

“Tinanggap ko na!” Paulo jokingly told the invited members of the media.

“Hindi naman maiiwasan. Ang pagbatikos kasi talagang I take it always as a challenge.

“I think yun yung dahilan kung bakit patuloy din akong nagi-improve.”

Paulo, who won Best Actor at the 2012 Gawad Urian for the film Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa, admitted that he finds criticisms—no matter how negative—as constructive.

“Dati rin naman [ako] binabatikos at ninais ko nang ninais na gumaling.

“Siguro ganun din po ang puwedeng mangyari, hindi ko naman po sigurado.

“Hindi naman natin mapre-predict yung future pero tanggap ko…”

He added with a smile, “Actually gusto ko na binabatikos ako para alam ko kung saan ako nagkukulang, kung saan ako dapat magko-concentrate.”

HOW THE ALBUM CAME ABOUT. How the project landed Paulo’s lap was timely. It was his one performance on ASAP that pushed his manager, Leo Dominguez, to get him a recording deal.

Leo, prior to meeting with music label Universal Records for another artist, happened to see Paulo’s song number on YouTube.

Soon, the actor’s album was in the works.

While recording the songs, Paulo was coached by Neocolors vocalist, Ito Rapadas, to whom the actor is thankful for.

Paulo is quick to admit, “Marami pang kailangan i-improve.”

Asked to critique his album, he answered, “Ako, I’m very happy with it. Although may mga tracks na gusto ko sanang ibahin yung boses ko.

“Kumbaga, reach a higher note… make it less raspy pero bilang ganun talaga yung boses ko, hindi kaya.

“So, bilang napakagaling naman ni Sir Ito, in-adjust na lang po nila yung instruments to go with my voice.”

The six-track album contains song revivals, the collection mutually agreed on by Paulo and Universal Records. It includes Basil Valdez’s “Gaano Kadalas ang Minsan,” APO Hiking Society’s “Yakap sa Dilim,” Alamid’s “Your Love,” Boyfriend’s “Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal,” Sasha’s “If You Believe,” and Restless Heart’s “When She Cries.”

Each of the six songs is accompanied by a minus one track.

ACTING AND SINGING. If there’s any song in the album that reflects Paulo’s current state of mind, he said it would be “If You Believe.”

While its lyrics go “If you believe in love tonight…,” the actor “sees” it as “If you believe in your dreams, if you believe in your goals, you’ll always reach it.”

Apart from receiving distinction for his acting skills, especially this year, Paulo achieves yet another dream as he releases his album this month.

“As a child I’ve always wanted to sing songs that I hear or be a rock star... Kaso mukhang hindi na ako magiging rockstar, eh!”

But since the chance to actually put out an album came about, he instantly “grabbed the opportunity.”

“It’s also nice to try something out of the box,” said the actor who plays a kontrabida in the Kapamilya primetime hit Walang Hanggan.

The decision to produce the album was also brought about by the notable success in his career.

“I think, yes. Isa dun sa mga rason kung bakit pinag-desisyunan na gumawa ng album ngayon ay dahil sa magandang pagtakbo ng career ko.

“At bilang pasasalamat ko sa aking mga taga-suporta at mga kaibigan na sumuporta since day one.

“Kaya nag-decide kami gumawa ng album bilang pasasalamat sa kanila.”

Paulo also tried to bridge acting and singing: “I think they’re similar on some ways because like acting, singing also brings out emotions that would help you be a better actor.”
