Last May 15, Six Part Invention is happy to announce that they are excited to be back with a new album titled Stripped and Covered.
Based on the album’s title, the group covered stripped versions of light rock '90s tunes.
In an interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other members of the press, Rey Cantong, the group’s multi-talented leader, revealed the reason behind the band’s decision to release a covered album instead of an all-original one.
Rey said, “Yung management decided why not— to [have a] cover album muna pare ma-refresh naman yung mga old hits ng Six Part Invention.
“And, pumayag din kami kasi this is the very first time na gumawa kami ng cover album.
“Ito yung time na ibalik naman namin yung request ng mga audience na gumawa kami ng cover album.”
The band’s first album under their new record label Universal Records contains covers of well-loved light rock hits. These include popular '90s songs such as Def Leppard’s "Two Steps Behind," Europe’s "Carrie " and Cheap Trick’s "The Flame," among others.
Rey explained, “We decided na hindi yung mga current, like the usual artists natin na ang nirerevive ay mga current hits.
“So we go way back dun sa mga paborito naming mga songs or yung era na magaganda yung song-writing, which is the early nineties.
“And, of course, sila Sir Peter din ang nagsabi ng ganung approach na gawin namin. '90s music lahat nanggaling.”
Meanwhile, the group is also excited that their latest album will be released in nearby countries such as Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
Universal Records’ Publicist and the group’s manager, Gian Carlo Vizcarra, revealed they are planning to visit and promote the album abroad. “Yun ang pinag-uusapan pa. Kasi i-schedule lang namin, at saka kung anong schedule pa sa abroad but, mauuna na yung album sa kanila.”
SIX PART INVENTION. The group is composed of Rey Cantong on lead guitars and vocals; his wife Kaye on lead vocals; his brother Andy on drums; and their good friend Andy dela Cruz on bass guitars.
Being a four-member group, members of the press curiously asked why they decided to name their band as Six Part Invention.
Rey shared, “Ang binibigay na meaning naming diyan is six musical elements complimenting each other and sounding as one.
“Kaso, a-apat lang kami [and] ang nangyari is apat kaming human musicians and then yung sequence na ginagamit namin and all the the electronic stuff na nakikita niyo dun, ang value sa 'min niyan ay two.
“So, two plus four is equal to Six Part Invention, something like that.”
Rey, and his brother Tag, have been performing together since their teenage years. They were frequently accompanied by their good friend Andy and they eventually formed a band. Kaye, on the other hand, was “discovered” by Rey in one of their gigs. They eventually fell in love with each other and ended up marrying each other.
Rey shared, “Briefly, nung pumasok po siya sa band, kailangan po namin ng lead singer.
“At that time tumugtog kami sa isang event, and then nandun siya, I asked her if she could [sing] mismo doon sa stage.
“She did [and] right at that moment, kinuha namin siya.
“And then, over the years, the usual na na-develop ayan, magkasama lagi. Basically, that’s it.”
Kaye added that her husband inspires her even more as they perform together.
She said, “Cliché pero talagang nai-inspire kapag kasama mo yung mahal mo sa isang trabaho.”
Rey added, “And yung rapport nandun na so, titingin ka lang, alam mo na yung ibig sabihin lalo na sa live gigs.”
