Alternative band Kaligta slated to release second album this 2014

In 2012, Kaligta released their first self-titled EP with a mix of covers and their original songs. Michael Artita (vocals, guitar), Sherman Tupas (bass, vocals), Arnold Artita (lead guitar), and John Michael Dino (drums) were geared towards a music career that inspires. These days, however, the former Soundskool Band Search finalist is introducing Kaligta Version 2.0 and they will go beyond just inspiration.

Kaligta is still an alternative band but working on their latest project has triggered frontman Michael to dig deep for writing all-original songs. He didn’t have to go very far; he turned to a theme that’s truly universal–love. But Michael wanted to explore the two sides of it. “Kapag nagmahal ka kasi, puwede kang sumaya pero may oras ding puwede kang masaktan,” he explains. These bittersweet experiences lead to Kaligta’s new sweet music.

The tracks on the upcoming album are about the different periods when you experience love, from a simple crush to a full-blown romantic relationship. “Sa Ating Dalawa” waxes nostalgic on the excitement you felt whenever you saw your crush. On the flip side is heartbreak and the album’s lead track “Broken Heart” tells the story of someone you love leaving you for good. Or the never-able-to-move-on theme of their current single “Ikaw Pa Rin.”

What brought on this surge of musical creativity? “Ito ang pangarap namin, ang gumawa ng album,” Michael says. “Isang malaking honor ang makagawa ka ng sarili mong mga kanta. Para kang nakatanggap ng grade na 100 sa ipinasa mong college thesis!”

Recording for Kaligta’s second album has made them learn more about what the band should sound like. “Ang dami naming tunog na gustong gawin, may new producer na rin, lumayo kami sa past. Dito [sa second album] lalabas ang tunay na tunog ng Kaligta.”

The band has grown up and what difference a year makes. On Kaligta’s latest album due for release early 2014, they let the listener be the boss this time. “Depende na sa kanila kung ano ang magiging interpretation ng songs,” Michael says.
