Richard Poon describes wife Maricar Reyes as a "natural"

Richard Poon is all set to release his second album The Crooner Sings Bacharach this October 3.

Richard Poon is set to launch his second album at the Shangri-La Mall’s East Atrium on October 3. The album titled The Crooner Sings Bacharach contains twelve songs by music icon Burt Bacharach.

The crooner gives songs such as "What The World Needs Now," "I Say A Little Prayer," and Close To You" a modern flavor in his upcoming album.

“It’s a mixture of jazz and pop,” Richard says about his album in a press conference held at Jet 7 Bistro in Quezon City last October 1. He jokingly told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other members of the media, “I think kung purely jazz wala na makikinig sa 'kin.”

He adds: “It’s a very small market, yung jazz. But if I go pure pop naman ang dami ring kalaban. It’s really a mixture of jazz and pop, very palatable to the ear.

Richard narrates how his record label helped him decide what songs to cover for his album. “I think Universal Records picked three songs, and favorite ko rin 'yang 'The Look of Love.' Medyo yun yung pinaka-friendly sa masa, we’re trying to widen the reach of the songs.

He recalls how he had to carefully make the song choices and listen to his label’s advice. “May pinili akong dalawang kanta, one of my favorites, 'One Less Bell to Answer' and another senti song, but they [Universal Records] dropped it because hindi masyado kilala ng tao.

Though it was hard choosing songs, he admits he felt relief after following his label’s advice. “Hard experience kasi kanya kanyang bias, e. But I think the management won and I also won again. They called me and said can we please include 'Walk On By' and 'What The World Needs Now' kasi sobrang kilala ng tao. Buti na lang sumunod ako at masaya kayong lahat. Mga unknowns pinipilli ko, e.”

Aside from the songs being carefully picked and arranged with a modern jazz-pop flair, Richard also says all the songs are equal in quality, no song is just a filler for the album. “I always get frustrated when I buy albums, I really don’t like it when I only like one or two songs, kasi yun lang yung maganda and the rest I just flush.

“So I always make it a point, kahit hindi napapansin, I try to make every arrangement the best, pantay-pantay yung ganda. I believe wala kayo itatapon diyan ni isa.”

A lot of the avid music fans nowadays are comprised by young people. How does Richard reach out to a bigger audience, young people included?

“I think the number one thing I can try is ASAP, dun kasi wala ako kinakantang jazz, it’s all pop. I am singing Tagalog dance hits from English. When you watch ASAP I think that’s the best way to reach the kids.”

The Crooner Sings Bacharach is available online for those who want to have it on their devices. Fans can also opt to purchase the physical CD that contains Richard’s exclusive album photo shoot.

The ASAP mainstay explains, “Available din yung album sa Spinner. Mas mura siya, P350 kasi physical album. But for us who downloaded it, it’s only P499 on iTunes and it comes out [around] P220 pesos on [online music portal] Spinnr.”

ON WIFE MARICAR REYES. Richard is impressed by the performance of his wife, Maricar Reyes, in ABS-CBN's primetime series Sana Bukas Pa Ang Kahapon.

Maricar is cast as the kontrabida in the teleserye topbilled by Bea Alonzo and Paulo Avelino.

“I’ve always believed na she’s a natural, I always tell her that,” says Richard about his wife whom he married in June 2013.

He reveals that Maricar hones her craft by observing actors in movies.

"Masipag siyang manood ng movies para mag-aral ng acting, yung mga nuance lang na hindi halata, very subtle."

The singer admires Maricar's ability to be comfortable in front of the camera.

"Bilib na bilib ako sa kanya...Baligtad ako, hindi ako marunong umarte, kinakabahan ako sa kamera, nate-tense ako, so she's natural."

Is Richard open to collaborating with Maricar for a future project?

“Singing with me in an album? Wow. Posible ba yun? Album na kami yung kakanta? I think my boss ang dapat mag decide," says the crooner.
