Did you know: Harana wasn't originally sung by Parokya ni Edgar?

Apparently, Parokya ni Edgar was not the original singer of "Harana" but Smokey Mountain member Tony Lambino.

Parokya ni Edgar has had a lot of hits over the years, but perhaps none as memorable and instantly recognizable as "Harana."

The gentle and sweet ballad, which is in the band's second album Buruguduystunstugudunstuy (released in 1997), is the ultimate ligaw song.

We'll never know how many times it has been sung on high school and college campuses by lovestruck boys (and girls).

It's funny though, that such a familiar, universally loved song can still surprise people, even years after it was released.

We're talking about those who are shocked to learn that "Harana" wasn't originally composed and sung by Chito Miranda and the rest of the PnE boys.

There have been at least a couple of Reddit threads started by people admitting that they only recently learned of this fact. The latest was just a few days ago.

For the record, "Harana" was originally composed by Eric "Yappy" Yaptangco, who was reportedly a senior of the PnE band members when they attended Ateneo De Manila University. There have been several stories written over the years about the genesis of the song, about how Yaptangco was supposedly pining for a girl and wrote the song for her in one night.

"Harana" was recorded by former Smokey Mountain member (and now Department of Finance assistant secretary) Tony Lambino in his 1992 album First Note. Check out his performance of the song on the TV show Ryan, Ryan Musikahan:

PnE actually talked about this a bit during their Inuman Sessions concert.

But the band has obviously made it their own and popularized it so much that it's become such a quintessentially PnE song. So really, if people are still thinking today that it's their original, can you blame them?
