Everyone loves a feel-good movie and theme song, especially when it comes from Disney, the home of family entertainment. That’s why when Disney Southeast Asia announced it picked two Filipinas – Sarah Geronimo and Rachelle Anne Go to sing “The Glow” and Cinderella’s “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” respectively, their kababayan stood up and cheered.
It’s a sign, not only that Disney was finally recognizing Filipino talent. It’s also proof that the multimedia company is looking at Asia as a lucrative market.
Sarah’s “The Glow” features a song even a child can sing along to. The melody, true to the Pop Princess’ style, is easy to follow. The catchy music video features shots of popular Disney princesses (such as Elsa of Frozen, Snow White, Pocahontas, Mulan, etc.) bringing up feel-good memories for the young and young-at-heart.
The appeal is in the song’s simplicity and wide range of favorite Disney princesses.
Rachelle’s music video, on the other hand, is different, not only because it focuses on Cinderella alone. The melody is a bit more complex – with more note variations at the end of a passage. A non-singer or an aspiring one will find this harder to mimic because it requires variety, out-of-the-box interpretation.
The contrast comes as no surprise, the two artists being who they are. Sarah’s background is pop. Theater has yet to beckon for her.
Rachelle Ann, on the other hand, is a product of many musical theater productions the latest of which is the London run of Miss Saigon. So you expect – and get – a more freewheeling style that runs the gamut of a singer’s vocal range.
So take your pick. Do you want a song you can deliver at the drop of a hat, and teach to the kid at home? Or do you want something you can tweak or turn a little bit?
The good news is, Sarah and Rachelle’s music videos have answers to both questions.
