This weekend, Lea Salonga will be staging her comeback concert in Manila titled Songs from the Stage.
The concert is scheduled to happen at the PICC Planary Hall this February 17-18, 2017.
PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other members of the press caught up with Lea at the launch of her new reality-based web series titled Disney Princess: I Dare To Dream.
It was held at Sugar Factory in Shangri-la at the Fort, Bonifacio Global City on Wednesday, February 15.
"It's been 15 years since the last concert that's devoted to musical theater and that was the Broadway concert," Lea said.
She continued, "That was in 2002. So we're like, 'You know what? We have to do another musical theater-themed concert.' Because there's so many more shows have opened since that last one in 2002.
"I mean, there's Hamilton, there's Waitress, there's Dear Evan Hansen. There's a lot that's opened. Plus, there are a lot of shows with songs of which I've not done."
The award-winning theater actress and world-class artist assured fans that she will be performing a lot of new songs for this concert.
"So here's an opportunity now for me to get to try my voice to this other material that we never got to try to do. There's a lot of brand new arrangements, and if there are songs that have been done before, I've never done them.
"So it’s like a musical adventure for me.
"And even some of the older stuff, we're featuring stuff from the '70s, stuff from the '80s. There's like stuff from Bacharach that was featured on a brand new show on the West End and off Broadway titled Close To You: Bacharach Reimagined.
"Even the arrangements of those songs from that cast album is different, it's like fresh spins on things which for us is part of the adventure."
However, the 45-year-old theater actress noted that the songs she will be performing is definitely challenging.
The Kapamilya singer explained, "If it's a musical theater song, it's gonna be vocally challenging, not just part of the chorus. In every musical that I've done, it's like there's always that thing in my head like, 'Can I sing this?'
"And it's emotionally challenging, as well, as vocally [challenging] so I think, with every musical number there's that element. Even if it's not a vocally challenging song, there's an emotional part that's sometimes difficult to get through but it's always fun."
Members of the press also asked why she wanted to stage her concert this weekend instead of Valentine's Day itself.
She explained, "There are a lot of concerts that happen on Valentine's Day and well, I like having concerts on a weekend.
"And I like reserving Valentine's Day for my family. I try not to do any work on the 14th but we're doing it on the 17th and the 18th which is kind of conventionally people go out, just to have fun.
"I figured it would be better to have it on a weekend because nobody would have to worry about, 'Oh, it's late!' That doesn't matter. It's more fun that way."
