Former child star-turned-pastor LA Lopez: THEN and NOW

LA Lopez, known as the singer behind DOH's infomercial promoting iodized salt in the '90s, is making a comeback this 2017 by releasing his album titled Ikaw Pa Rin.

Former child star Lyle Areanne Lopez or popularly known as LA Lopez makes a showbiz comeback with a new album titled Ikaw Pa Rin.

He recently appeared on the ABS-CBN show Umagang Kayganda where he talked about his album.

The former child actor moved to the United States and stayed there for seven years where he became a pastor and pursued musical theater at the Florida School of the Arts.

LA said during his UKG guesting, “Doon ako naging pastor at doon ako nag-aral ng musical theater.”

He returned to the Philippines in 2009.  According to LA, “Tapos nung bumalik ako around 2009, yun na basically ang sumalubong sa akin bagyo…yung Ondoy. Then God has been so good that He allowed us to plant a church dito sa Quezon City and Taguig.”

He now serves as a pastor at Abundant Harvest Fellowship Philippines.

Why is he making a comeback? The 32-year-old actor and singer simply said, “Pag-ibig ko, musika talaga.”

He is very thankful to be given another opportunity to penetrate showbiz.

“Nakakatuwa at nabigyan ako ng opportunity to come back para matulungan ko ang simbahan ko.

Naniniwala ako na gusto kong makabuo ng foundation para dun sa mga bata na nasa ministry namin at gusting mag-aral. Halos puro youth ang sa amin. God has been so good that he has moving through us. Ang prayer ko na gamitin ang awit ko para makatulong sa ibang ministry.”

His new album Ikaw Pa Rin contains three original compositions and features “Ikaw Pa Rin” as the carrier single.  He added that “dalawang Christian songs and one of which was composed by Sir Jonathan Manalo.”

When LA joined the talent search “That’s My Boy” on Eat Bulaga, he caught the eye of Comedy King Dolphy.

The child actor then appeared in Dolphy's show John & Marsha Ngayong ‘91.  His showbiz career as a child star boomed.  He was part of the hit kiddie variety show Eh Kasi Bata along with Aiza Seguerra and RR Herrera.

LA also got to be part of other shows such as Juan Tamad at Mr. Shooli, Kokey, and Mongolian Barbeque.

During the ‘90s, he had almost everyone humming along to the Department of Health commercial with the jingle "Iodized salt, iodized salt, mag-iodized tayo!"

Even at a young age, his singing prowess stood out, allowing him to win several Awit awards. He won the Awit Award for Best Performance by a Child/Children Recording Artist/s twice: in 1994 for "Opo, Po, Po" and in 1995 for "ABC."

In 2002, his song “Yakap” became a big hit. As a songwriter, his composition “I See You” became the theme song of ABS-CBN’s My Binondo Girl starring Kim Chiu.
