Sam Milby said he personally went to the Star Music office in ABS-CBN to deliver the finished music video of Kyla’s latest single “Only Gonna Love You” last January 18.
According to Sam, he rode his motorbike just so he can beat the 6:30 p.m. deadline for submission of the music video.
It was scheduled for airing the following day, January 19, on MYX Channel.
Sam said, “At least, mga 7 p.m. dumating ako, tapos naka-motor ako papunta dito, yeah.”
Sam was the video editor, John Prats the director, and Angelica Panganiban the writer in the making of Kyla’s music video.
The trio’s budding company Bright Bulb Productions was tapped by ABS-CBN’s music recording arm, Star Music, for this project.
THE MUSIC VIDEO SHOOT. Talking about their experience in creating Kyla’s music video, John said that they were challenged to deliver the best.
“Si Kyla, first time ko nakasama.
“Hindi kami nag-abot ni Kyla when I left ASAP two years ago.
“Pero siyempre, napapanood ko siya nung nasa kabila pa siya, yung mga kanta niya like ‘Hanggang Ngayon.’
“Kinabahan talaga ako to direct her. Pero magaan, relaxed, parang hindi kami nagwo-work.
“Naglagay kami ng shots na medyo candid para makita namin yung genuine aura ni Kyla.”
John went on to say that it was Sam who took over editing Kyla’s music video.
“Saka itong music video ni Kyla four times namin in-edit, four days.
“Sinasabi ko kay Sam on the third day, ‘Sam, do you wanna get an editor?’
“He said, ‘No, I wanna do this!’ Kasi parang, 'Four days na tayong puyat dito!’
“Pero gusto ni Sam, e. Na-challenge si Sam dun sa fact na alam niyang kaya niyang gawin.
“Sobrang proud ako. Ang galing! The transitions, the effects, siya yun lahat! Gifted siya.”
Sam, for his part, said that it was his second time to edit a music video after doing Moira’s “Malaya.”
“Moira's music video is very simple when it was edited.
“But this one's more of a challenge for me because I’m not an editor.
“I’m kind of learning as I go watching music YouTube videos and tutorials. I’m doing it that way.”
Sam and John were interviewed at the blogcon for Kyla’s music video “Only Gonna Love You” at the Star Music office last Friday, January 19.
At one point during the Q&A, a staff member from Star Music recounted how it was like working with Sam as video editor.
The staff member said, “Ang deadline niya 6 p.m. sa MYX. 6:30 p.m. wala pa.
“Parang natatakot yung mga Ad Prom ng Star Music, ‘Ipa-follow up ba namin si Sam?’ Sabi ko, ‘Kulitin niyo na si Sam na celebrity. Editor siya dito.’
“Pumunta talaga siya, binigay niya ng 7 p.m.”
Sam piped in, “I had to do two different versions too. I was trying to hurry—finish the first version and cut it down to a shorter version.”
Will he do video editing again after this experience?
Sam answered, “It was stressful, pero I am enjoying doing this so okay naman."
WHAT'S NEXT? Sam added that he's excited to continue growing Bright Bulb Productions with business partners John and Angelica this 2018.
“When we started Bright Bulb, it wasn’t for music videos. It was mainly for concerts.
“We’re part of yung concert ni Moira next month, we’re co-producing that, and that's the main reason we started Brightbulb.
“But then, when we found out that Moira has no music video yet for ‘Malaya,’ we thought, ‘Let’s try to do the music video.’
“Tapos it worked out. That’s kind of like where we started heading.”
John revealed that they are also making the music video for Kyla’s next single “Fix You And Me,” which will be launched a few weeks from now.
It will showcase the second part of the music video's narrative about a popular singer (played by Kyla herself) whose partner (played by JC de Vera) will ask her to choose between love or her career.
John elaborated, “Because ang trademark namin is very narrative. Ang ganda lang ng idea ni Jonathan Manalo na gusto niya may Act 1 and Act 2.
“So after watching the first music video, yung ‘Only Gonna Love You,’ ano ba yung sinasabi ni JC na ‘If you change your mind, let me know?’
“So, yun yung magpapa-curious for the second music video na aabangan niyo.”
