Richard Poon will stage his November 12 concert with a 25-piece orchestra

"I’ve never worked with a 25-piece big band orchestra. Siguro ang pinakamalaki ko is mga 15. So, it’s challenging to work with a very big orchestra," Richard Poon says about his upcoming concert. Titled Richard Poon: The Crooner, the concert will be held on November 12 at the PICC Plenary Hall, CCP Complex, Pasay City.

After his first major concert at the Meralco Theater last May, Richard Poon sets up another concert to cap the year. And to make it more memorable, he will be singing standard songs with a 25-piece orchestra at the PICC Plenary Hall, CCP Complex, Pasay City on November 12.

The 35-year-old singer-songwriter, who recently bagged the Best Concert Performer of the Year at the Aliw Awards, says this concert is meant to entertain his older audience while introducing memorable classics to his younger fans.

"Kasi, very rare na ngayon ang kumakanta ng big band so, I wanna give especially the moms and dads, mga lolo at lola, you know, the music they love to hear. Ito ’yong mga music dati na pine-play dati noong ’60s sa clubs. I wanna bring it back for them to enjoy the memories. Kasi, bumabalik daw ang memories kapag kinakanta or naririnig nila, natutuwa sila," he explained when PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) asked him why he put up another concert this year.

He also treats his concert, which is dubbed as Richard Poon: The Crooner, as a challenge for himself.

Richard relates, "I’ve never worked with a 25-piece big bang orchestra. Siguro ang pinakamalaki ko is mga 15. So, it’s challenging to work with a very big orchestra."

He adds, "This is the biggest, 25-piece band. You know, if you really know how it is to work with musicians, magkaroon ka lang ng apat sa banda medyo challenging na. But we have 25 in one stage, it’s pretty difficult."

The show will be directed by ASAP XV director Johnny Manahan while the musical direction will be led by Mel Villena.

CELEBRITY GUESTS. Aside from the big band, Richard will also have celebrity guests for his concert. He will be joined by Broadway artist Lea Salonga, Princess of Comedy Pokwang, and Acoustic Heartthrob Sam Milby.

"My manager and I talked about it, kung sino ba ang gusto kong guest. Pokwang has been a very nice. We have a very good relationship with her.

"Sam Milby, everybody knows naman na ever since nag-start kami, hindi pa naman kami ka-okay but we’re really supporting each other. It’s my way of saying na, ’You know what, you’re a good friend. Thank you for lahat ng help mo sa akin.’

"For Lea, I think she’s the Queen of PICC. Nobody fills PICC na top to bottom, kahit na ilang nights, except Lea Salonga. And I believe, for me who will just start trying PICC, why not guest the Queen of PICC."

Although, Richard is popular for singing standard songs, he says his guests will do something different on his one-night concert.

"It’s different per artist. I wanna bring out the best in somebody," he says.

Richard then relates, "Like si Sam, I told Erik [Raymundo, talent manager], ’Erik, huwag nating ipag-swing si Sam.’ Kasi, iba ang phrasing ng swing. So, when Sam sings swing, ’yong phrasing niya ng pop or acoustic, hindi pumapasok. It will make him look like half baked. So, I said, ’No, I’m gonna shift to his music.’ Ako ang mag-a-adapt sa music niya.

"But kay Lea, baligtad. Kay Lea iba because she initially asked for a song na medyo big band na in-arrange ni Mell Villena for her years ago, so we’re gonna do swing. Sabi niya, ’I’m tired of Broadway the whole year so, can I sing with you.’ So, she’s gonna go now to my genre which is swing.

"Si Pokwang naman, we’re gonna do something new. It’s rock and roll big band, Brian Setzer Orchestra type. Big band siya pero medyo rock and roll with a heavy guitar. She’s gonna go to my genre pero rock and roll namin gagawin ’yon."
