Bea Alonzo can be considered one of the country's loveliest and most popular actresses of her generation.
The 25-year-old actress has been in the Philippine showbiz industry for a decade, allowing her to portray a wide range of characters on television and in the movies.
She recently portrayed a kept woman in The Mistress wherein she was paired with her loveteam partner of 10 years, John Lloyd Cruz. This October, Bea and John Lloyd will be seen again on television for ABS-CBN's upcoming primetime series, A Beautiful Affair. The characters of Bea and John Lloyd will figure in a love triangle with John Estrada in this teleserye shot partly in Vienna, Austria.
During the October 20 episode of Showbiz Inside Report, host Carmina Villaruel had a delightful chat with the 25-year-old actress.
Bea (whose real name is Phylbert Angelli Ranollo Fagestrom) has British father and a Filipino mother. Because of her white complexion, she was fondly referred to as "Tisay” by her neighbors and schoolmates in Taguig.
Her parents separated when she was four years old. As a result, the young girl would often move from one residence to another.
“Mom ko noon, naglilipat kami ng bahay kasama yung partner niya, yung dad ng kapatid ko," Bea recalled.
As a young child, Bea stayed at three different places: the house of her mom, the house of her lola whom she calls “Mommy,” and her aunt who is childless.
When Carmina asked if Bea found this situation difficult, Bea replied, "Mahirap lalo na yung na-aattach ka sa mga tao sa bahay....” With this kind of set-up, she learned to withdraw from people and she eventually became someone who doesn't easily open up to others. Bea explained, “If I say too much, parang feeling ko, nastri-strip ako too much. Hubad ako pag sinabi ko lahat ng nararamdaman ko...
Is she angry at her biological father whom she has never met?
Bea admitted, “More than the galit, mas puzzled ako why it happened? Di ko siya malagyan ng mukha. I have no idea what he looks like.."
She continued: “At some point, nagkaroon ako ng urge [to meet her father], kaya lang…Mas natakot ako sa thought na ma-reject ako. I cannot afford another rejection sa buhay or another rejection as big as that.”
Prior to joining showbiz, Bea joined a lot of contests in the past. “Pangarap ng lola ko na maging beauty queen ako. Ako, gusto kong maging artista." She said her family was strict about her activities during her childhood. “Di ako pinapalabas sa bahay para di ako makapeklat. Wala raw beauty queen na may peklat.”
Archie Ilagan, Bea's discoverer, disclosed that Bea really wanted to join showbiz. “Sinabi niya sa akin, gusto niyang tulungan ang pamilya niya. Noong nakita ko siya, she has the looks, the charm....she was 13 or 14. After a week, dinala ko siya sa talent center. And fortunately, nagustuhan na siya. Bea was launched as part of Star Circle Batch 10 in 2000.
Her first team up with John Lloyd Cruz for Kay Tagal Kitang Hinintay was her springboard for stardom and things weren't the same again for the tisay beauty.
How did she come out of her shell?
“May nangyaring sitwasyon na dapat di ko isolate ang sarili ko. Parang it came to a point na, I'm already 23 pero parang mag-order ng drinks sa bar, di ko alam kung paano. 22 or 23 na ako noon, di ko pa rin mag-small talk sa isang total stranger…”
Bea revealed, “Nagkaroon ako ng confidence na kahit may ibang tao na ayaw, ok lang as long as I am happy.”
PRETEND ROMANCE WITH ZANJOE. When asked regarding the beginning of her romance with fellow ABS-CBN actor Zanjoe, Bea narrated: “Matagal ko nang siyang kilala. Nagkaroon pa kami ng episode na out of the country. Kalalabas lang niya noon sa PBB [Pinoy Big Brother] house. At that time noon, sobrang in touch ako sa spiritual life ko. I was trying to make a conversation with him...sa haba ng flight...na bore siya at tinalikuran ako. My God, inisip ko, bakit ang bastos naman ng lalaking ito. Una pa lang inisip ko, di ko makakasundo ito...”
She then narrated that during one incident at a bar she wanted a persistent guy to back off so she pretended that Zanjoe was her boyfriend. That incident paved the way for Bea and Zanjoe to cultivate their friendship.
Bea and Zanjoe became close to each other after five years. Zanjoe became her constant companion and he became Bea's “best friend.”
The actress knows that she could count on Zanjoe. “Pagkailangan mo siya, naandiyan siya…Eventually, nagkaroon siya ng chance na pwede siyang manligaw....mga three months [before they became officially a couple] .. ayoko ko pa...we hold each other's hands but we are not officially together. Ayokong lagyan ng label.”
How did they start out officially as a couple?
The actress replied with a smile, “Siya na kasi naghahanap noon [ng commitment]. Feeling lang niya siguro naglalaro ako...hindi naman. Hanggang nasa bahay ako, dumalaw siya. Sorry babe, hindi romantic. [Sabi ko] 'Tayo na ha.'”
Does Bea consider Zanjoe a big part of her life now?
“Siya yung nagsasabi sa akin, 'There's nothing wrong kung gusto mo 'yan sabihin.'" She credits Zanjoe for encouraging her to enjoy the moment since she has the tendency to worry about the future.
How much does she love Zanjoe?
“Ang hirap ng tanong. Di mo siya ma-measure. Mahal ko siya. Super...sa sobrang super, immeasurable...”
JOHN LLOYD ON BEA BEING IN LOVE. In a separate interview, John Lloyd gave his observations about his perennial loveteam partner.
"I've never seen Bea so happy, so excited about life. Nanggaling siya doon sa makapal ang wall...she was always intense. Laging seryoso, tutok sa trabaho. Pero nung nagsimula na sila ni Zanjoe, unti-unti nang nag-open up sa mundo,” said JLC.
ZANJOE ON HIS GIRLFRIEND BEA. Former PBB housemate Zanjoe Marudo had the chance to work with Bea in the family drama Sa 'Yo Lamang.
When asked about his girlfriend, Zanjoe disclosed that Bea likes to be kissed a lot. “Gustong-gusto niya nagpapahalik. Nagpapa-kiss at sinasabihan ng 'I love you.' Proud ako na nakilala ko ng babaeng katulad ni Bea. Napakabait na tao. Napakabait sa pamilya, kaibigan at mga nakapaligid sa kanya. Kaya siguro blessed na blessed si Bea.”
MARRIAGE PLANS? When asked when she plans to settle down, Bea admitted, “Ideally, gusto kong mag-asawa in five years pero gusto ko man lang 30 or 31, magkaroon ng anak. Gusto ko rin ma-enjoy yung next chapter ng buhay ko.”
ON HER NEW TV SERIES. The actress says about their new show A Beautiful Affair: “It's very, very romantic. Pinag-uusapan namin ni Lloydie. Pag may na meet ka, tapos ganoon kaganda ng lugar at sa mga pinagdaanan mo, siguro ike-keep mo na lang yung memory na 'yan sa buhay mo. It's a story on love and loyalty...can you love someone and be loyal to another? Parang ganoon...Di natin maiialis ang infidelity. But it's totally different from The Mistress."
A Beautiful Affair will air its pilot episode on October 29 on ABS-CBN.
