Jay Manalo plays a seasonal farm worker in "Maalala Mo Kaya"

In the September 21 episode of Maalala Mo Kaya, Jay Manalo (left) plays a sakada (seasonal farm worker) toiling in the sugarcane fields of Bacolod.

The hardships of a sakada (seasonal farm worker) are documented in ABS-CBN's anthology show Maalala Mo Kaya (MMK). The episode starring Jay Manalo as Miyong will be shown this Friday, September 21.

This episode shot in Bacolod was mired in controversy when the lead actor was involved in a misunderstanding with a member of the MMK staff. In an article written by Ogie Diaz in People's Tonight last August 20, he mentioned that an assistant crowd director of MMK was insulted by actor Jay Manalo.

The assistant named Allan was supposed to be the roommate of Jay for the duration of the shoot. However, Jay pointed out that he wanted to have the room for his own since he wanted to have time alone with Ana Capri, who was part of the episode as Miling. As a result, the offended assistant packed all his bags and left.

"Supposedly, nagjo-joke lang si Jay Manalo sa staff, yung assistant crowd director na umalis," explains Mico del Rosario, the publicist for MMK. "Happy si Direk Chito Roño sa performance ni Jay Manalo. Whatever transpired in their room is a private matter between them. Hindi siya concern ng show pero looking forward ang MMK na makatrabaho uli si Jay Manalo."

Maalala Mo Kaya documents a boy's struggle against his father, poverty, and the plight of a sakada (seasonal farm worker). At a young age, Giling stopped school and engaged in the strenuous work in the sugarcane field of a wealthy haciendero upon his tyrant father's orders. When Giling was 13, his younger brothers Pering and Felix died because of poverty and ignorance. Giling was made to believe that work is the foundation of a man to survive—but is it still the same case after his brothers' deaths? Is his struggle bearing fruit or will he continue to be a slave to his father and the tyrants of the land?
