Kara David reports on Aetas preparing for May 2013 elections

Apr 22, 2013

"For many Aetas, to vote means to put their thumb mark on a ballot. It doesn't mean they can read and choose from the candidates' names. It doesn't mean they understand what their "assistant" wrote on their ballot. It only means theirs are the votes with no voice--- a muted and somehow abused position for "no read, no write" Filipinos.

"But the elderly Aetas of Sitio Malipano, Zambales now want to be heard. Under the shade of a tree, they are slowly learning the alphabet, reciting what their grandchildren have learned ahead of them. Malou, an Aeta teacher from Porac, Pampanga, travels far from her hometown to give adult education in the sitio. Will they be ready for this coming May's election?

"Ba-be-bi-BOTO" is second of the I-Witness documentaries on Filipino voters. Catch Kara David and the Aetas of Sitio Malipano in their class this Monday, April 22, in I-Witness after Saksi on GMA-7."
