BATTLE OF FANTASY HUNKS: Gerald Anderson versus Aljur Abrenica

Gerald Anderson (left) is cast as the mortal lover in Dyesebel while Aljur Abrenica (right) falls in love with one of the mermaid twins in Kambal Sirena.

The competition on the small screen heats up with the arrival of two mermaid-themed shows on Philippine television.

ABS-CBN offers a remake of Mars Ravelo's Dyesebel while GMA-7 presents the original series Kambal Sirena.

These two shows herald the arrival of summer in this tropical country.

The Kapamilya Network and the Kapuso Network maximize the use of picturesque locations in the Philippines in these upcoming primetime programs.

In fact, teasers provided by both networks make use of a beach setting and provide ample eye candy by tapping hunk actors who appear shirtless to better show off their toned physique.

DYESEBEL. In Dyesebel, Gerald Anderson is cast as Fredo, the human who falls for Dyesebel (played by Anne Curtis).

In the teaser, Gerald's character is shown riding a speedboat when he spots Dyesebel in the ocean. Gerald strips off his black sando and jumps in the water where he comes face to face with the characters of Sam Milby (who plays the merman Liro) and Anne.

KAMBAL SIRENA. Aljur Abrenica is cast as Kevin in Kambal Sirena, which is slated to start airing tonight, March 10.

Louise delos Reyes is the lead star who plays twins Perlas (who possesses gills) and Alona (who has a mermaid tail).

Aljur's character is described as follows:

"Ang lalaking mamahalin ang magkakambal na sina Perlas at Alona. Minsan na silang nagkatagpo ni Alona, ang dalagang hindi niya inakala na isa palang sirena. Mahuhulog ang loob niya kay Perlas, nang hindi nalalamang kambal pala ang dalawa."

In Aljur's Kambal Sirena teaser, he is shown standing shirtless near a shoreline with a rocky formation serving as his background.

In the next frame, he is shown removing his white sando.
