Months after being estranged from her mother, Charice finally shared the same stage with Mommy Raquel during the September 21 episode of ASAP 19.
The internationally acclaimed singer performed a duet with her mother for the song “Maghintay Ka Lamang.”
As Martin Nievera introduced singing sensation Charice, the 22-year-old singer couldn’t hold back her tears, prompting Mommy Raquel to immediately wipe away her daughter’s tears.
Charice admitted that even after going back home two weeks ago, she still hasn’t showed her emotional side to her mother, “Two weeks pa ako umuwi pero hindi pa ako nagiging emotional sa kanya. Hindi pa ako nakapagpasalamat sa lahat kasi nahihiya ako.”
After coming out the closet, Charice points out that her courage to be true to herself was inherited from her mother.
“I just want to say that everything, kung sino man ako ngayon, lahat yun, yung lakas ng loob, nakuha ko sa 'yo.
“Kahit na ano man ang nangyari dati, ito pa rin tayo nasa harap ng buong mundo, sinasabi natin sa kanila na kahit anong masama ang inisip nila sa atin, akala nila hindi tayo magkakaayos, pamilya pa rin tayo,” Charice tearfully said.
The singer hopes that their story can serve as an inspiration and that they can be a “role model” to others going through a similar situation, and to always believe “[na] basta pamilya kayo, walang problemang hindi maso-solve.”
“I love you. I love you, Karl. I love you, Alyssa [Quijano, Charice’s girlfriend.] I love you, daddy. I am very happy and this is the best achievement that I could ever have in my life,” said Charice as she professed her love for all the important people in her life.
Mommy Raquel also gave her own touching speech, saying, “Ang masasabi ko lang po, gaano man katagal lumipas ang panahon, basta nandito lang ako naghihintay sa mga anak ko na bumalik pa rin sa akin.
“Para ipaalam ko lang sa lahat, kahit anong nangyari, mahal na mahal ko pa rin kayo,” Mrs. Pempengco said with tears in her eyes.
It may have taken a long time before they were able to finally patch things up and understand each other but as Martin pointed out, this chapter in their lives is “not a happy ending, but a happy beginning.”
