Toni Gonzaga addresses concerns about sympathy votes in The Voice PH

The Voice PH Season 2 will be hosted by (L-R) Luis Manzano, Toni Gonzaga, Alex Gonzaga, and Robi Domingo. Toni says it is up to The Voice contestants to prove they "deserve a spot in this industry."

Toni says it was necessary for Luis to join the team this season because of a new twist to the show.

"May mga iba't iba kaming assignment kaya pinalaki ang grupo namin ngayon. Kasi may mga steal na so mas kakailanganin ng manpower when it comes to hosting and delivering for the show."

When asked to explain the concept of "steal," Toni explained: "Pwede na agawin ng isang coach yung ituturn down ng isang coach sa battle rounds."

During the battle rounds, each coach will have to pit two artists against each other and choose only one that will move on to the next round. If a coach likes an artist, he or she can "steal" the losing artist. If two or more coaches like the losing artist, the artist (just like in the blind auditions) gets to choose which coach or team to transfer to.

What kinds of contestants can viewers expect in the second season?

"May pulis, may chemist, may anak ng politician...senador," recalled Toni.

Luis disclosed, "May na-interview ako na naglalako sa loob ng bus, isang instructor ng wakeboarding, may nagbebenta ng feeds...

"All walks of life ang tumapak sa The Voice at kakanta para sa ating coaches."

TONI TALKS ABOUT WORKING WITH ALEX. It seems that working with one's sibling does have its downside, as Toni found out while co-hosting with her younger sister Alex.

Toni admits, "Minsan naiinis ako sa kanya [Alex] kasi parang walang sense yung sinasabi niya tapos salita pa ng salita.

"Minsan gusto kong mag-concentrate o kaya may gusto akong imemorize...

"Yun lang pero sa aming dalawa lang kasi si Robi at Luis alam na nila pag time na para mag-memorize.

"Si Alex kasi walang pinipiling panahon, siyempre kapatid ko.

"Alam niya, anytime pwede niya akong lokohin."

Did she ever shout at Alex out of frustration?

Toni and Alex answered affirmatively at the same time. "Sobrang daming beses!" exclaimed the older sister while Alex confirmed, "Lagi!"

WHY THE UNDERDOG ALWAYS WINS. Toni, who recently celebrated her 15th anniversary in showbiz, shared her insights about contestants who win in Pinoy reality shows.

In The Voice Kids, there were criticisms raised when Lyca Gairanod (a former scavenger) triumphed even though there were those who believed that Darren Espanto was more deserving to win the reality show.

"Dahil kung nagiisip kang viewer at alam mo ang sistema ng isang competition: the underdog always wins in the Philippines."

Toni believes that there is an emotional outpouring of support for those who have suffered greatly.

"Talagang iba ang kapit nila sa [life] story...sympathy, they empathize: ganun ang Pilipino."

The host also shared her observation regarding the winners of another Kapamilya reality show, Pinoy Big Brother.

"Kahit sa Pinoy Big Brother, may gusto kaming housemate kasi siya ang nagpakatotoo, siya yung matapang pero ang nananalo yung may background story na nakaka-relate ang masa.

"Laging ganun," declared Toni.

"I always say naman hindi ito ang magde-determine ng estado niya sa buhay sa industriya...na kung second lang siya, forever siyang magiging second."

Toni, who also hosted the kiddie talent search Little Big Star, gave another example of a runner-up outshining the actual champion.

"I remember si Charice. When nanalo si Sam Concepcion, galing na galing rin ako kay Charice [who ended up in third place].

"Tingnan mo nangyari, naging international singing sensation siya."

"Kasi wala naman yun sa position mo sa competition, nasa kung paano mo haharapin ang tunay na competition after the competition."

She believes competitions like The Voice PH are simply stepping stones for those who are deserving to enter the entertainment scene.

"They should see The Voice as a stepping stone, hindi katapusan ng mga pangarap nila."

Toni, who is a two-time Aliw Awardee for Best Emcee, gives a reminder to aspiring singers who will join The Voice of the Philippines:

"After this, after the competition, ang totoong kumpestisya sa industriya na ito ay mahigpit talaga.

"'Pag labas mo ng The Voice of the Philippines, ang makakasagupa mo na diyan, kakalabanin mo nang mga singers ang the likes of Sarah Geronimo, Yeng Constantino, Angeline Quinto, yung mga singers talaga.

"Kaya ikaw, bilang artist, na sa iyo yun kung paano mo ipapakita na you deserve a spot in this industry."
