Makakasama niya sa cast sina Empoy Marquez, Bianca King, John “Sweet” Lapus, Jojo Alejar, Jun Sabayton, Assunta de Rossi, at Diana Zubiri.
Directed by Jade Castro, ang Mac & Chiz ay weekly sitcom na nakatakdang umere simula January 18, 2015 sa TV5.
First time nga raw mapapasabak ni Derek sa isang sitcom.
Aniya, “I’m very excited because I’m gonna learn so much… we have Sweet, Jojo A., Empoy, mga natural comedians.
“I believe kasi comedy is a talent, e, you have to be born with it, so kailangan kong masubukan if I have the talent, and I have the best guys to learn from.
“So, I’m really, really excited to learn from these guys.”
Sa Mac & Chiz ay gagampanan ni Derek ang role ni Macario “Mac” Vasquez, na kakambal ni Francisco “Chiz” Espinosa, played by Empoy.
Na-imagine niya ba na magiging kakambal niya si Empoy?
“Never, it’s a brilliant idea!” natatawang sabi ni Derek.
“Nung prinisent nga sa akin, sabi ko, ‘I’m on board.’
“Kasi ilang beses na kaming nagtrabaho ni Empoy in front of the camera ‘tapos mga shows going around the Philippines, masaya siyang kasama.
“So, in front of the camera on the set, sigurado maglalaro-laro lang kami diyan.
“And I’m gonna be a little boy learning from all of them about comedy.”
Welcome change ito para kay Derek kumpara sa mga dati na niyang ginagawa.
“Well, this year I really concentrated to show my versatility.
“For many years, I was always tagged as the guy who has always two girls [from the movies No Other Woman and A Secret Affair]. I feel I have more to offer than just playing roles like that.
“So, medyo extreme yung mga role changes na ginawa ko this year.
“I did the typical Derek which was Trophy Wife, and then I jumped to playing a kontrabida for the first time on the big screen in The Janitor, and I got a lot of compliments when it comes to that.
“Then I did my first rom-com [romantic-comedy] which is English Only, Please, where it’s completely different from shooting heads off to being an 18-year old boy making pakilig.
“I’ve really challenged myself this year na ipakita yung versatility ko.
“Then ngayon, I’ll start 2015 with a comedy rather than hosting since The Amazing Race is coming to an end.”
