The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic dealt a huge blow to the Philippine television industry.
ABS-CBN and GMA-7 have both temporarily stopped the production of teleseryes and other shows in compliance with the government’s implementation of the enhanced community quarantine.
This resulted to the airing of a new programming line-up which include re-runs of well-loved Kapamilya and Kapuso programs.
For the month of March 2020, GMA-7 kept its winning streak in nationwide TV ratings according to AGB Nielsen data. This is based on a release sent by GMA's corporate communications department.
Citing the latest data from Nielsen TV Audience Measurement in March (with March 22 to 31 based on overnight data), GMA registered 33.8% average total day people audience share in the National Urban Television Audience Measurement (NUTAM).
On the other hand, ABS-CBN registered 29.4%.
GMA continued to dominate in key urban areas including Urban Luzon and Urban Visayas. The Kapuso network recorded 35.4% total day people audience share in Urban Luzon while ABS-CBN posted 26.5%.
In the recently-clinched Urban Visayas, GMA also posted a bigger lead with 35.9% versus the Kapamilya network’s 32.5%.
With official data from March 1 to 21, the Kapuso network likewise won in Mega Manila with 37.7% total day people audience share, outperforming ABS-CBN’s 25.1%.
In the list of overall top-rating programs, Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho (KMJS) still reigns as the number one show nationwide as well as in the respective lists of Urban Luzon, Urban Visayas, and Mega Manila.
During this COVID-19 crisis, GMA’s flagship newscast 24 Oras emerged as the most watched news program nationwide and in all the said areas.
Making it high in this month’s list of top-rating Kapuso shows is the replay of Encantadia followed by Descendants of the Sun (The Philippine Adaptation).
The other Kapuso shows that got high ratings during this period were Centerstage, Daig Kayo ng Lola Ko, Wowowin Primetime, Pepito Manaloto, Magpakailanman, Daddy’s Gurl, the re-run of Kambal Karibal, Anak ni Waray vs Anak ni Biday, Amazing Earth, Prima Donnas, Eat Bulaga, and Love of my Life.
