Roxanne Barcelo had not been active in doing teleseryes when she landed the role of Natalie in Wildflower, a top-rating Kapamilya drama series from February 2017 to 2018.
Wildflower, top-billed by Maja Salvador in the role of Ivy Aguas, was Roxanne's comeback teleserye with ABS-CBN after nine years of doing projects with other networks.
Viewers hooked on the show tagged Maja, Roxanne, and Aiko Melendez together as Wildflower's "three little witches," vixens staking out one another for the kill.
The series currently airs on ABS-CBN's Primetime Bida block, among the other previous teleseryes being shown on the Kapamilya network in lieu of regular programming.
The rerun recently aired this confrontation scene—where Ivy splashes water on Natalie's face as a warning, "Huwag ako!"—that trended online during Wildflower's first run.
The show gave Roxanne newfound popularity as a kontrabida.
But did you know that she was not the first choice for the role of Natalie in the teleserye?
In a February 2018 interview in Tonight With Boy Abunda, Roxanne said the role had actually been given to Danita Paner.
In fact, Danita's name appeared in the poster when Wildflower premiered on February 2017.
Roxanne told Boy Abunda, as far as she knew it was Danita who decided to quit the show and her reaction then was, "Ako naman, being very ate, 'Naku, sayang naman iyong role na iyan. Ang ganda!"
Two weeks after Danita backed out from the project, Roxanne got a call from ABS-CBN asking her to audition for the Natalie role.
She recalled in the Tonight show, "I found out na they were doing a quick audition. This was the audition that I was most comfortable doing."
On the night of the audition, Roxanne was told she got the role of Natalie.
After Wildflower, Roxanne did more TV appearances with the Kapamilya network, including a stint in It's Showtime's "Tawag ng Tanghalan: Celebrity Champions."
Roxanne will again be seen on television in a teleserye with Bea Alonzo and Richard Gutierrez. The project is slated for 2020.
THE REASON WHY DANITA BACKED OUT
In an interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) held in October 2017, Danita explained why she decided to back out of her supposed role in Wildflower.
She recalled, "Ang nangyari po kasi noon, hindi ko alam kung anong karakter, sinabi lang sa akin na part ako ng show.
"After noon, nag-pictorial na. During pictorial, tinanong ko, 'Ano po ba iyong character sketch?'
"Kasi, wala akong idea, ayoko naman sumalang na hindi ko alam yung gagawin ko."
Apparently, the role was too sexy for Danita.
She said, "So, noong sinabi sa akin [na sexy], sabi ko, 'Hindi ko kaya.'"
Danita also denied that she backed out of the role because she refused to have a haircut, which was required for Natalie's look.
"May lumabas na isyu na tumanggi raw ako dahil ayokong magpagupit... ang babaw naman. It’s very lame.
"Hindi ko po siya tinanggap kasi, at that time, feeling ko, hindi ko kayang gawin yung role—sobrang sexy."
