It has been five years since Maine Mendoza made her first appearance as Yaya Dub in GMA-7’s noontime variety show, Eat Bulaga!

Maine’s launch as Yaya Dub happened on July 4, 2015, when she was introduced as the personal assistant of Lola Nidora (Wally Bayola) in the segment “Juan For All, All For Juan.”

In that first episode featuring Maine as Yaya Dub, she was seen getting out of a limousine.

She wore her pink apron as she assisted Lola Nidora alight from the vehicle.

Yaya Dub was a play on Dubsmash, a popular app where a user dubs voices from movies, TV shows, or songs.

It explained why, in the beginning, Maine as Yaya Dub merely lip-synched the songs and popular lines of movies.

When host Jose Manalo tried to interview her, Yaya Dub wordlessly gestured she didn't want to talk to him.

On July 16, 2015, the "Kalyeserye" segment began with the first meeting of Yaya Dub and Alden Richards through a split-screen, and the AlDub love team was born.

MAINE LOOKs BACK on first days as YAYA DUB

On Saturday, July 4, 2020, Maine celebrated her five years in showbiz in a Facebook Live session.

When host Tristan Cheng asked Maine about her first few days as Yaya Dub, Maine said that she does not watch replays of her shows.

She reasoned, “Nakakailang! Nakakaiyak kung babalikan mo."

Elaborating, she added, "Pero that time, siyempre, noong pag-uwi ko, hindi ko kayang balikan kasi nagki-cringe ako sa ginagawa ko!”

Maine then recalled what happened on her first day as Yaya Dub in Eat Bulaga!

She narrated, “Aga ko kasi umalis ng bahay! Gumising ako 5 a.m. 'tapos umalis yata ako around 6 or 7 a.m. kasi siyempre, takot ma-late di ba? First day!

"Parang hindi pumasok sa isip ko mag-show off or magpakitang gilas or whatnot.

Maine, however, conceded that her first day was made easy and light by her co-hosts collectively known as JoWaPao—Jose Manalo, Wally Bayola, and Paolo Ballesteros.

She also recalled the warm welcome she generally got from everyone in the show.

"Pero sobrang babait ng mga tao, walang negative impression iyong first day ko talaga.”

MAINE’S AUDITION IN EAT BULAGA!

Maine also recounted how she got the part of Yaya Dub in the “Juan For All, All For Juan” segment of the longest-running noontime show in the Philippines.

Eat Bulaga! called her to audition for the show's new segment.

Her audition happened on June 19, 2015, with Eat Bulaga! creative manager Jenny Ferre as the audition master.

Maine was surprised that the other aspirants had come prepared with their own acts to show they got what it took to be part of Eat Bulaga!

She said, “Siyempre wala naman akong alam sa ganito, di ba?

“’Tapos lahat sila prepared! Meron pang may dalang gitara.

Maine remembered watching them all rehearse for their auditions because she was the last person to go on stage.

She quipped during the live session, “Siguro binase sa, 'Sino dito iyong mukhang walang talent, siya iyong ihuli natin para hindi siya mapahiya.' So ako iyon!"

But at that time, Maine was already popular on the Internet because of her Dubsmash interpretations of the famous "You are pretty" conversation between Kris Aquino and her son Bimby and the infamous "My Pamily" answer of Janina San Miguel in Binibining Pilipinas 2008.

She continued, “So ayun, nag-audition ako.

“’Anong kaya mong gawin?’ E, since iyong ginagawa ko that time kaya siguro ako pinag-audition doon, mag-Dubsmash.

"I was making faces, parang nagpa-pangit ako, so iyon na lang sinabi ko, magpapanget ako or Dubsmash.

“’Tapos ayon, pinaarte ako nang baliw. Kunyari ano, nag-ala Sisa ako doon. Hiyang-hiya ako sa sarili ko.

"Pero since andoon na ako, wala na akong time mag-inarte, kailangan ko nang gawin kung ano iyong kaya kong gawin.

“’Tapos inisip ko na lang na kung may mapala man ako dito sa audition na ito o wala, basta hayaan ko na, basta ayoko lang umalis doon na wala akong nagawa for them.”

Maine has practically sworn off her audition tape.

In fact, she ended her anniversary live session with a plea, "Di ko talaga kayang panoorin yun hanggang ngayon, kaya huwag mong ipe-play.

Maine remains to be a co-host of Eat Bulaga!, although she no longer plays Yaya Dub in the show.

She is a mainstay in the GMA-7 sitcom Daddy’s Gurl, which has been running since 2018.

She had done a few movies, including Imagine You and Me (2016) and Isa Pa With Feelings (2019), and a teleserye, Destined To Be Yours, in 2017.
