GMA-7’s upcoming live-action adaptation of the popular Japanese anime Voltes V, titled Voltes V: Legacy, is pushing through.

This is confirmed by GMA-7 creative director for drama programs Aloy Adlawan in an exclusive interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) on September 5, 2020.

Currently, the adaptation is in the script development stage.

Aloy says, “Tuluy-tuloy ang scripting and we are waiting for the additional approval ng Japan for half of the… I think na-approve na yata nila, kasi na-submit na namin iyong half of the story map, the last half of the story map.

“So tuluy-tuloy lang kami sa scripting.”

Given that most shows are being postponed or shelved because of pandemic, Kapuso viewers get a little bit worried about the fate of Voltes V: Legacy.

But Aloy assures that its shoot requirements are actually manageable.

He explains, “Actually, hindi siya as challenging [as with other shows] kasi marami siyang green screen. Marami siyang CGI and special effects, so medyo we can proceed with it.”

CGI stands for Computer-Generated Imagery or computer graphics.

In fact, there are no instructions for upper management to stop developments for Voltes V: Legacy.

Aloy continues, “All systems go for Voltes V. Walang instructions na whatsoever to delay.

“Siyempre na-delay lang siya kasi ang dami namin prinioritize na mga bagay, lalo na sa production, pero tuloy pa rin kami.”

Aloy and GMA-7 drama creative consultant and writer Kit Villanueva, who is also in the interview for her other programs, throws in, “I think tuloy siya kasi kawawa rin iyong mga artistang nandoon, di ba?”

PEP.ph asks: Does this mean that the network has already selected the cast?

Aloy answers, “Actually, they’ve been doing script readings na. For the past months, nag-script reading sila kaya tuluy-tuloy sila.”

However, they can't make a full-blown announcement yet about the stars who will top-bill the project. GMA-7 production manager Helen Rose Sese is in charge of this.

Aloy elaborates, “I’m sure may nakalatag si Helen na plans for Voltes V in terms of saan nila ire-reveal iyong cast, may cast reveal, may ganyan…

“May pakita ng mga bagong special effects or iyong mga beast fighters and all that, mga bagong designs.”

With regard to the cast, Kit hints, “Maganda iyong cast. Exciting siya.”

The target airing is yet to be determined.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF VOLTES V: LEGACY

The tittle-tattle about GMA-7’s plans of doing a live-action adaptation of Voltes V began in the last quarter of 2019.

GMA-7 confirmed it through a one-minute teaser of Voltes V, which was aired during the New Year's Countdown 2020 on December 31, 2019.

The teaser showed the iconic super electromagnetic machine Voltes V and its headquarters called Camp Big Falcon.

Viewers also caught a glimpse of Boazanian prince Zardoz, the main nemesis of the story.

Director Mark Reyes, who helmed GMA-7’s iconic fantasy series Encantadia, is also tasked to direct the project.

He had been actively posting developments about the adaptation before the pandemic.

Noel Flores, Encantadia’s costume designer, is also tapped.

VOLTES V DURING THE MARTIAL LAW

Voltes V used to air on GMA-7 in the late '70s.

However, in April 1979, before GMA-7 aired its finale, former President Ferdinand Marcos issued a directive to ban Voltes V and other similarly-themed anime series due to "excessive violence."

There were speculations that the series was banned due to its underlying themes of rebellion and revolution.

Years later, Voltes V returned to television in various networks: PTV-4 and ABS-CBN in 1986, IBC-13 in 1989, and RPN-9 from 1988-1990.

GMA-7 aired Voltes V again in 1999.

Since it went off the air during martial law, Filipino viewers were unable to see how the anime ended.

The last five unaired episodes were compiled and released theatrically by GMA Films.
