MMK draws flak for using Muslim prayer mat as doormat in scene; issues apology

MMK apologizes and owns up to "lapse in production" for this scene in its January 9, 2021 episode featuring the life story of actor JC Alcantara.

On January 10, 2021, a Facebook page called UGH posted a screenshot of a scene from the drama anthology Maalaala Mo Kaya (MMK) showing the actor JC Alcantara using a sojada/sajadan or a Muslim prayer mat as a doormat.

The UGH Facebook page reacted, commenting, “Respeto naman sa mga MUSLIM ginawa nyong doormat yung SOJADA ng mga Muslim na ginagamit sa pag Prayer”

The post currently has 3K reactions from netizens.

The rest of the text from the screenshot read (published as is): “Na curious lang ako sa sinabi ng pinsan ko about sa episode ng MMK last night, ginawa daw nilang doormat ang sajadan/prayer mat. So pinanood ko sa youtube. Totoo nga. [sad emoji] Hindi ako nagpapaka religious ah. Napansin ko lang din [sad emoji].”

In the morning of January 11, 2021, MMK issued an apology about the episode, which was posted on the show’s social-media accounts.

The statement read: MMK expresses deep regrets for a scene in last Saturday’s episode that may have offended its Muslim viewers.

“It was an honest mistake and we offer no excuse for this lapse in production.

“We thank our viewers for the feedback and promise to do better.”

The episode that aired on January 9 featured the life story of JC Alcantara, who rose to fame after getting the lead role in the hit Boys Love series Hello, Stranger in 2020.
