It’s confirmed: ABS-CBN Entertainment is doing the Filipino adaptation of BBC Studios’ hit psychological drama Doctor Foster.
ABS-CBN and BBC Studios announced today, April 13, 2021, that they forged a deal for the Filipino adaptation of the hit drama series about a wife who suspects that her husband is having an affair.
Doctor Foster has already been adapted into different countries, with South Korea’s 2020 top-rating drama The World of a Married Couple as its latest incarnation.
The hit BBC drama, which was top-billed by English actress Suranne Jones, also had adaptations in Russia, Turkey, India, and France.
WHO WILL PORTRAY THE LEAD IN the pinoy version of DOCTOR FOSTER?
In January 2021, there were already reports saying that Kapamilya actress Judy Ann Santos was being considered for the lead role.
That same month, a source told PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) that the owners of Doctor Foster’s rights were impressed after watching Judy Ann’s video clips and that the actress was their only choice to play the lead.
The same source also told PEP.ph back in January that Fangirl lead actress Charlie Dizon was offered the role of the mistress.
In a PEP Live interview in February 2021, Charlie said that she has no idea yet about the project and that she would love to work with Judy Ann.
She said, “Wala pa pong sinabi sa aking ganun kaya nagulat din po ako noong nakita ko iyon sa Twitter pero wala pa naman pong ganun.
“Kinabahan nga ako actually noong nakita ko iyon kasi nga si Miss Judy Ann talaga, iyan talaga iyong number one. Kung sakali man po, sana meron nga po talaga. Sana magka-chance na makawork ko siya.”
At that time, ABS-CBN announced that Charlie is set to top-bill another drama series, Viral, with Dimples Romana, Jake Cuenca, and Jameson Blake.
In a different report back in January 2021, another Kapamilya insider told PEP.ph that another actress is being considered for the role of the mistress: new Kapamilya Janine Gutierrez.
However, when PEP.ph asked Janine in her PEP Exclusives interview in March 2021, she said that she has not yet heard anything about the project.
Today, April 13, 2021, after ABS-CBN's announcement of its deal with BBC Studios, PEP.ph spoke with the Kapamilya insider who gave the information about Janine.
The insider mentioned that actress Angel Aquino, who is currently in the prime-time series FPJ's Ang Probinsyano, is also being considered for the role of the wife, as Judy Ann has yet to say yes to the bubble or lock-in taping set-up.
According to the insider, Judy Ann and Angel are the top two choices for the role of the wife.
The same source added that Paulo Avelino is being considered for the role of the husband. Paulo is currently seen in the prime-time series Walang Hanggang Paalam, which will end its run on Friday, April 16.
An ABS-CBN report said that the local adaptation will go into production later this year.
Dreamscape Entertainment, an ABS-CBN Entertainment content providing unit, will be at the helm of the project.
Executive producers of the project are Carlo Katigbak, ABS-CBN president and chief executive officer; Cory Vidanes, ABS-CBN chief operating officer for broadcast; Laurenti Dyogi, entertainment production head; Deo Endrinal, Dreamscape Entertainment head.
Andre Renaud, SVP Format Sales for BBC Studios, said in a statement that he is “confident” that the series will be a hit among Filipinos.
It is also an “honor” for their team to have ABS-CBN Entertainment produce the project.
He said, “It truly is an honor to know that ‘Doctor Foster’ will be coming to life in the Philippines under the extraordinary creative team at ABS-CBN Entertainment.
“I know that they will not only craft a unique and special story, but that they will capture the complex struggle of modern relationships from the perspective of the strong female character that sits at the heart of this series. I am confident this will be a hit among the Filipino audiences.”
Cory Vidanes, for her part, thanked BBC Studios and said that it is a “privilege” for the network to produce the local version of Doctor Foster.
She said, “It is a privilege for us to be able to produce this highly engaging and relatable story for the Filipino audience. A scorned woman’s strength is real as she fights to stay whole when the marriage and family she values most is falling apart.
“True to our commitment to serve the Filipino, we are excited to create our own retelling of this beautiful story, to see the characters come alive with unique Filipino elements that will definitely excite our audiences.”
The Kapamilya network has yet to officially announce the names of the artists who will play the lead roles in the show.
