WithThe Broken Marriage Vow drawing to a close, the show’s director Connie Macatuno admitted there were scenes that brought her to tears while shooting.
One of those scenes? The party in the pilot episode, where Dr. Jill Ilustre (Jodi Sta. Maria) discovers her husband David (Zanjoe Marudo) is having an affair with a younger woman named Lexy (Sue Ramirez).
In an exclusive interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) via Zoom, Direk Connie admitted she cried as they shot the pivotal scene. “Kasi connected ka bilang babae, bilang tao na binetray ka ng mga napaka-importanteng tao sa buhay mo.”
The scene required a lot from Jodi, and Direk Connie said she made sure to prepare their lead actress accordingly.
She recalled her conversation with Jodi, “Tinanong ko siya bago namin shinoot yun, ‘Okay ba sa iyo na ito yung emosyon na meron ka ngayong araw na ito? I know it’s going to be heavy, but feeling ko kasi makakatulong yun sa iyo kaysa puputul-putulin natin iyan and then babalikan natin on another day and continue natin.’”
Jodi pulled off the scene beautifully, and Direk Connie was all praises for the show’s lead actress.
“Ang husay niya dun, e. Ang husay niya dun. I think it was one of our scenes na mabigat na shinoot… [and] mararamdaman mo yung bigat din na dinala ni Jodi as an actress and ni Jill as a character.”
There were many other scenes that drove Direk Connie to tears as they were shot, such as the emotional scenes between David and Jill, and Gio (Zaijian Jaranilla) and David.
She said the actors, fully immersed themselves in their roles, breezed through the scenes realistically.
Direk Connie said, “May level of intensity that [they] really will have to dish out something authentic from within themselves. Yung hindi siya pwedeng, ‘I-aarte ko ito.' Yung talagang may huhugutin ka para mailabas mo yung ibang dimension ng character na ito.”
The ABS-CBN adaptation of Doctor Foster promises to have such intense scenes all the way to the end, in what they call a “heart-stopping finale.”
The Broken Marriage Vow airs its final episode on June 24 at 9:20 p.m. on the Kapamilya Channel.
