Angel Aquino will depict the life of a cervical cancer survivor in the upcoming Maalaala Mo Kaya episode this Saturday, May 30, 2015.
The actress accepted the role without any hesitation since she wanted to help educate women and empower them with knowledge about this disease. She will portray the role of Veron, a wife and a mother of five kids whose family is clueless about her fight against cervical cancer.
In an interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) Angel Aquino shares that she really has a heart for cancer victims.
“I got my shots early when I found out about cervical cancer. You can avoid it so I got my shots pati yung mga anak ko when they were age ten.
“Kasi you wouldn’t want it to happen to you. You wouldn’t want it to happen to your family kasi nakikita mo yun, happening around you. I feel for those who are going through kahit anung klaseng cancer actually.”
In support of the cervical cancer awareness month, MMK features the story of Veron (Angel) a loving mother who dedicated her whole life to take care of her husband and their five children. Along with the pain of finding out about her husband’s infidelity, Veron finds out that she has cervical cancer.
PEP had the chance to interview Angel when she shot scenes at the Rizal Medical Center, Pasig City recently.
What is this MMK episode all about?
Angel: “This is for cervical cancer victims. Ako naman everything that can help educate women and empowered their knowledge, tatanggapin ko.”
Please tell us something about your role in this MMK episode.
Angel: “I play the role of Veron. She is a middle-aged woman. Hindi naman sila well-to-do family, they are just surviving day-by-day. Ang asawa niya [played by Tonton Gutierrez] ay isang driver. They have 5 kids.
“Actually, yun yata ang isa sa cause kung bakit siya nagka-cervical cancer, kasi medyo napagod ang matres niya. So, mahina siya sa mga ganung viruses.
“The story is all about her as a mother, struggling with cancer and how she dealt with it in her own, kasi hindi niya muna sinabi sa pamilya niya dahil nga she wanted to spare them the trouble. So, for a long time, siya lang ang may dala dala nung problema until nalaman ng mga anak niya at ng family niya. Eventually her husband left her, kasi nga siguro, she is not functioning as a wife. But she survived her cervical cancer. Ironically, it was the husband pa nga ang unang namatay dahil sa lung cancer.”
How can you relate to your character in this episode?
Yun! Yun ang isa sa pinaghuhugutan ko rito, na kung paano kapag may dinadala kang problema na kay bigat-bigat that you cannot share with anyone. You have no partner, para tulungan ka. I guess yung isa pa ay yung having children, yun yung kailangan mo silang iwanan. Just being a mother itself, isa na yun sa mga anchor ko for this role na hindi ko ma-imagine that I will have to leave my kids or even my nanay.”
Why is this episode a must-watch and what can viewers learn, especially mothers?
Angel: Kasi cancer is happening rampantly not just cervical, breast cancer it’s everyone seems to you know, hindi naman everyone seems to have it but a lot of people are falling with cancer kasi kulang ng awareness.
“For this one masasabi natin na kung ano yung possible causes ng cervical cancer and then they can avoid that, kung baga pwede nilang bantayan.
“[Ask yourself] Do I sleep with a lot of multiple partners? Does my husband sleep with a lot of women? Kailangan nilang tignan yung mga ganun and then they can also check [for symptoms]. That’s very important. Prevention is more important than cure.
“Last na gusto kong malaman nila dito the hope that they can survive the cancer, kasi she did she’s been in remission for 17 years already so cancer doesn’t have to kill you.
“If you deal with it well, medicate at agapan mo and you have the support of people who really love you and you have faith in yourself and in God, you will survive it.”
After being part of Bagito and this MMK episode, what are your upcoming projects?
Angel: “I was in the story conference of ABS-CBN Dreamscape for the new teleserye na And I Love You So, starring Julia Barretto, Inigo Pascual and Miles Ocampo. Kaso, hindi pa kami nag-start mag taping, kasi siguro inaayos pa yung script. Alam mo naman ang ABS-CBN, masyado metikuloso sa paggawa ng isang teleserye.
“About the movie naman, wala pa sa ngayon. Na mi-miss ko na nga gumawa ng movie. But I guess, may nilulutong movie si Lav Diaz na part ako. Pero hindi ko alam kung kakayanin ko, pag nag-start na kasi yung teleserye ko baka hindi kayanin, kasi alam mo naman yung teleserye hindi ka pwede mawala ng matagal.”
