GMA-7 actor Gabby Eigenmann looks back on the role that won him this year’s PEP List Editor Choice’s Award for Teleserye Actor of the Year.
The afternoon soap, Dading, centered on an openly gay father played by Gabby. He recalls the difficulty of playing the character at the time, “Honestly speaking, it’s so hard to portray a gay guy, especially parang a father also.
“Like I always say, it’s always easy to do hand gestures or to do movements to be a gay, but the emotion would always be difficult.”
He was mindful of his performance as he was aware that the character will give a different light to the portrayal of gays in television.
In a previous interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal), he shared his realizations about his role.
“They’re people. They’re not different naman for a woman.
“Actually, sinabi ko na’to dati, sila, they have the softest heart.”
Gabby is grateful to PEP.ph for acknowledging the show as one of the highlights in 2014.
THE REAL DADINGS. The afternoon drama has made LGBT single parents braver to admit that they, too, are "Dadings".
Gabby is proud to say that the show has made a positive difference in their community.
“I think the most important thing is I’m very thankful that LGBT was very, very supportive.
“They didn’t say bad things about what I did. So, they approved the wit.
“It happens, after watching Dading and after doing Dading, most of the Dadings in real life came out e.
“Natutuwa ako kasi I was given an opportunity and a privilege to do this character.”
KAPUSO SUPPORT. Afternoon and primetime soaps in the Kapuso network have been pushing the boundaries with their characters.
Following the success of My Husband’s Lover and the recent acclaim for Dading, GMA-7 continues to produce soaps that focus the spotlight on the LGBT community.
Their recent project is The Rich Man’s Daughter which pairs up Rhian Ramos and Glaiza de Castro as lovers.
The Kapuso actor is certain that the Kapuso Network is doing something good for the LGBT community.
He left them with a message saying, “Thank you very much for being supportive,
“And I’m sure tuloy-tuloy lang naman ang supporta nila sa halos lahat naman ng GMA shows, kasi most of the GMA shows lately, they’ve been catering to the LGBT crowd.
“So, like The Rich Man’s Daughter, My Husband’s Lover.
“I’m very, very thankful, not just for my part, but sa lahat ng mga gumaganap na pangkaraniwang tao ngayon whether boy, girl, bakla, tomboy. Nand’yan ang suporta nila.
“And at least nakikita ng tao at nare-realize ng tao na nando’n na ‘yong equality.”
