Regine Velasquez-Alcasid is very much excited for her concert comeback via Regine At The Theater.
It will take place on November 6, 7, 20 and 21 at Solaire Hotel and Casino.
During the latest press conference for her concert at Luxent Hotel, Regine told the press that her preparation for this concert is very different from previous ones in the past.
“I think it’s easier pag pop concert kasi you know, I can include my songs, I can include new songs, old ones.
“Ito kasi, medyo tedious yung pinagdaanan naming proseso dahil nga we want to be able to get the right mix of new songs and some expected songs and songs that I want to sing.”
It can be remembered that during her Silver concert last 2013, she lost her voice while performing. At the time, she was suffering from acid reflux.
Is she more focused with her preparations after what happened?
“Hindi naman mapapaghandaan ang sakit. You try your best, [take] vitamins and all that.
“Actually ngayon may sakit ako kasi pag nagkasakit yung anak ko, automatic na may sakit ako, e.
“So I just pray, I keep praying that I’ll be… my voice will be in tough condition that day.
“God willing I think I’ll be fine. Ngayon kasi kahit na inuubo ako, nakakanta ako, e. Kasi wala naman na akong acid reflux.
“Noon kasi kaya nawala completely yung voice ko, it’s because of the acid reflux kasi kapag nagkasakit ka kasi, yung virus will attack the weakest part of your body.
“And at that time, the weakest was my throat because I was suffering from acid reflux. Once in a while, I will have an attack but it’s not as bad.
“So bumalik na yung dati na kahit may ubo ako or kahit malat yung speaking voice ko pero pag kumanta ako meron pa rin.”
MUSICALS. Asia's Songbird reveals the difficulties that she encountered while preparing for this concert.
“Most of the songs or musicals na napili namin, I’m actually familiar with, except maybe for one or two na hindi ko napanood, pero napanood ko yung pelikula so I kind of searched a little bit.”
However, she also find it hard to rehearse the songs. “Hirap, pag nag-re-rehearse ako. Hindi kasi siya necessarily mataas, e.
“But the materials are really very hard to sing, very challenging for a vocalist kasi first of all, sa musicals kasi, ibang boses yung ginagamit nila, e. Ibang placement, hindi yun pop, e.
“Although there are other musicals na medyo pop songs. For me medyo kino-consider kong pop yung Wicked. Feeling ko lang ha, medyo yun na yung mas pinaka-pop.”
Regine also said that her repertoire won’t only be limited to Broadway songs. She will also have a tribute to musical director Mr. Ryan Cayabyab (also known as Mr. C) and songs from Filipino musicals.
“Mayroon akong tribute kela Mr. C pero di ko sasabihin kung ano yun, pero you know, he has written a lot of musicals here in the Philippines so I’m doing that.
“I’m also doing siyempre sikat na sikat naman si Aegis. Dapat kailangang bigyan ng tribute ang Rak of Aegis kasi I think that’s one of the most successful to date na musical sa atin.
“Kaya natin ginawa na ganon na hindi lang kami limited to, otherwise we would have called the show Regine at the Broadway or something diba.
“Kaya ginawang theater kasi we wanted to be able to sing some OPM songs.”
CONCEPTUALIZATION. What inspired Regine to hold this kind of concert?
“Kasi tayo ngayon dito sa Philippines, parang theater is so in demand, it’s so big nowadays.
“Ang daming mga musicals na ginagawa dito. Na-e-excite ako kasi yung mga musicals na ginagawa dito, yung iba foreign pero karamihan Filipino yung cast.
“So kahit ibang bansa yung production, pagdating dito sa Pilipinas, ang dami na nating theater actors, yun na rin yung ginagamit nila.
“So nakakatuwa yun kasi nagbu-boom talaga that way yung ating theater scene dito sa Philippines.
Regine added, “So actually, this concept, I always wanted to do this concept many years ago pa, kaya lang ngayon ko lang talaga na timing-an na perfect din naman kasi usong-uso ang musicals ngayon.
“So parang in a way, I want for some of the people na hindi pa nakita yung ganitong play, kunyari The Phantom of the Opera, parang gusto kong ipakita sa kanila yung mga songs doon.
“Or i-introduce lang yung mga songs na naging hit from the musicals.”
If there is one person who would be happy to witness this concert of hers, it would have been her late father Gerry Velasquez.
Regine revealed that her father was still actually alive when she conceptualized the concert.
“Oo, actually buhay pa siya talaga noong kino-conceptualize ko tapos hini-hintay niya na gagawin ko.
“Unfortunately, hindi ko nahahanapan ng tamang panahon, tamang schedule tapos nabuntis na ako, nagkaroon na ng bagets [so] lalo akong na-busy.”
Also, she pointed out that compared her previous concerts, she is not as much as involved in the preparations.
“Actually ngayon nga mas hindi ako involved na, e. I’ve tried not to be too involved with the projects I’m doing right now.
“Kaya like yung mga concerts, we hire a director kasi mas iba na yung focus ko ngayon, focus ko sa family ko. But I do still try to be kahit papaano involved.”
However, she revealed that this concert did not have a director. She and her sister Cacai Velasquez-Mitra collaborated for the concept of Regine At the Theater.
“Like itong concert na ito, wala kaming director. I think it’s just me and my sister Cacai who really thought of like the concept and all that.
“She is handling the staging, I’m handling the rep [repertoire]. Yung husband naman niya, [Raul Mitra] who’s my musical director is handling all the arrangements.
“Kasi hindi naman siya kasing laki ng Araneta [Coliseum], though ang preparation, ganoon din.
“Pero it’s easier for me to not have a director kapag ganitong series lang kasi pagtayo ko naman sa stage, ako na rin naman yun.”
But she warned that concertgoers must not expect grandiose productions and or flamboyant ensembles.
“Kasi the concept is at the theater, parang hindi din naman masyadong bagay if lumipad ako, parang di bagay masyado. Yung mga ganong concert, pang pop talaga yun.
“Although meron kaming mga konting surprises but nothing like that. This concert is more of music, singing.”
Regine will also have Jonalyn Viray, Aicelle Santos and Audie Gemora as guests.

REGINE REACTS TO DARNA. Regine said she felt sad when she learned that Angel Locsin backed out from the new movie version of Darna because of a disc bulge in her spine.
It can be recalled that Regine once wore the Darna costume for the 2003 remake of Captain Barbell starring Ogie Alcasid.
Her voice also served as the shouting Darna voice of Angel in the 2004 GMA-7 telefantasya.

“Actually nalungkot ako. Di ko napanood yung interview niya but I just saw it sa Instagram.
“But she is right, she has to first take care of herself before anything else. At saka mahirap yung back, e.
“And you know that girl kasi is so ano… she’s so athletic.
“Kasi kapag bata ka di mo napapansin, tira ka ng tira, go lang ng go tapos as you get older, you realize you’re not a Darna, you’re just a normal person.
“But I’m sure it’s a very hard decision for her but saludo ako sa ginawa niya, kumbaga hindi siya nag-commit ng hindi siya sure kaysa nga naman mag-inarte siya doon di ba?”
