William Thio, 90s matinee idol-turned-newscaster, bags Gawad Amerika and WAHOD Excellence awards

Nineties matinee idol-turned-newscaster William Thio on bagging two awards this year: “When I look back, I never thought that I would one day receive an award for being a newscaster. It took a long time to get recognized, but I am thankful for all of what is happening right now.”

“When I look back, I never thought that I would one day receive an award for being a newscaster.

“It’s been nine years since I decided to have a career in broadcasting.

“I now believe that this is my calling.

“It took a long time to get recognized, but I am thankful for all of what is happening right now.

“It inspires me more to do good in my profession,” pahayag ni William nang makapanayam siya ng PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) sa kanyang thanksgiving party noong December 7 sa Annabel’s Restaurant sa Tomas Morato Avenue, Quezon City.

SHOWBIZ ROOTS. Nagsimula bilang commercial model si William hanggang pasukin niya ang showbiz in 1997 via Star Circle Batch 5.

Natatawang pag-amin ng 41-year-old newscaster, “Matanda na talaga ako!

“I’ve been in showbiz since the ‘90s pero hindi ko nakita ang lugar ko doon.

“Yes, I did movies and a few TV shows, but I wasn’t really into acting.

“Doing the news came so naturally to me and this is the place for me.

“Now that the blessings are coming in the form of these recognitions, all the more na mas kailangan kong maging credible in order to deliver the news effectively.”

Bukod sa kanyang shows sa GNN (Global News Network) na News Force and Opinion Leaders, nasa UNTV 37 siya via Spotlight.

CONFLICT OF SCHEDULES. Kasama rin si William sa news program na Why News, pero nag-resign na siya rito.

Masakit man kay William, kailangan daw na magbawas siya ng trabaho sa TV para wala na itong conflict sa kanyang negosyo.

Paliwanag niya, “I run our family business. I’m a contractor and we have several projects ongoing.

“I personally go to the sites para alam ko ang mga nangyayari.

“Because of that, ilang beses na rin kasi akong absent sa Why News.

“Nakakahiya na sa mga kasama ko roon, like si Diego Castro who is the news anchor.

“I resigned from the show because I can no longer fulfill my duty.

“Kung ipipilit ko, merong maapektuhan sa ibang trabaho ko.

“The show naman was doing well kahit noong wala pa ako.

“I will always be grateful sa UNTV, most especially kay Kuya Daniel Razon, for giving me that opportunity.

“There are sacrifices that you really have to make para walang maging problema sa ibang tao.

“Naging very understanding sila sa mga times na hindi ako nakakapasok. Pero ayokong abusuhin iyon.

“It’s better that I leave the show para walang problema.”
