The noontime shows of ABS-CBN and GMA-7 marked two different ways of welcoming 2016.
EAT BULAGA. On the first Saturday of 2016, Alden Richards celebrated his 24th birthday.
He was treated to a song number from his AlDub leading lady, Maine Mendoza who sang "The Closer I Get To You."
In an emotional speech, Alden told everyone: "Hindi po ako nakaranas ng birthday na ganito ka-special.
"Thank you po sa lahat ng nag-isip na gawin po ito.
"Maine, thank you.
"Ma'am Jenny [Ferre, Eat Bulaga! creative consultant], sa lahat ng writers, at saka Mr. [Tony] Tuviera, Eat Bulaga! thank you so much.
"Kanina pa ako nagpipigil pero hindi ko na po mapigilan [mapaluha].
"Thank you po. Asahan ninyo po na pagbubutihan ko po yung pagpapaligaya na ibinibigay ko sa inyo, kasama si Maine at Eat Bulaga!
"At maraming salamat po sa ibinibigay ninyong suporta.
"Hindi ko po inakala na mararating namin ang ganito.
"Dahil po sa inyo 'yan.
The Pambansang Bae also shed tears as he thanked his mother who passed away in 2008.
"Ma, kung nasaan ka, sana masaya ka kasi para sa 'yo ito, e. Lahat para sa 'yo."
IT'S SHOWTIME. On January 2, It's Showtime launched Tawag ng Tanghalan, the classic singing contest that gave rise to today's OPM legends.
Nora Aunor, Pepe Pimentel, and Bobot Mortiz were some of the celebrities who started out as contenders in the said contest.
Talents from Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, and Metro Manila compete in a bid to become the Philippines' next singing superstar.
There are four contestants will battle daily and will showcase their singing prowess to the madlang people and the hurados.
This week, OPM singers Rey Valera, Rico J. Puno, and Bobot Mortiz were joined by Nyoy Volante and Yeng Constantino as judges.
When the singer goes out of tune, "Jhong the Gong" (Jhong Hilario) will hit a gong that signals the contestants to stop singing. The defending champion received P25,000 while the runners up get P5,000 as consolation prize.
Michelle Arcain from Davao City emerged as the first weekly finalist.
Amy Perez and Mariel Rodriguez-Padilla also officially joined the It's Showtime family.
MEGA MANILA RATINGS. How did Eat Bulaga and It's Showtime fare based on data from TV ratings data supplier AGB Nielsen TV Audience Measurement?
A high percentage of TV viewers watched the birthday celebration of Alden on Eat Bulaga.
On January 2, Eat Bulaga was able to get a TV rating of 29.9% in Mega Manila.
Meanwhile, It's Showtime scored 8.6% that day.
This represents a 21.3-point difference between the two shows.
