On January 2, 2016, Alden Richards (left frame) celebrated his 24th birthday on Eat Bulaga while It's Showtime launched the Tawag ng Tanghalan contest.

The noontime shows of ABS-CBN and GMA-7 marked two different ways of welcoming 2016.

EAT BULAGA. On the first Saturday of 2016, Alden Richards celebrated his 24th birthday.

He was treated to a song number from his AlDub leading lady, Maine Mendoza who sang "The Closer I Get To You."

"Maine, thank you.

"Ma'am Jenny [Ferre, Eat Bulaga! creative consultant], sa lahat ng writers, at saka Mr. [Tony] Tuviera, Eat Bulaga! thank you so much.

"Thank you po.

The Pambansang Bae also shed tears as he thanked his mother who passed away in 2008.

IT'S SHOWTIME. On January 2, It's Showtime launched Tawag ng Tanghalan, the classic singing contest that gave rise to today's OPM legends.

Nora Aunor, Pepe Pimentel, and Bobot Mortiz were some of the celebrities who started out as contenders in the said contest.

Talents from Luzon, Visayas, Mindanao, and Metro Manila compete in a bid to become the Philippines' next singing superstar.

There are four contestants will battle daily and will showcase their singing prowess to the madlang people and the hurados.

This week, OPM singers Rey Valera, Rico J. Puno, and Bobot Mortiz were joined by Nyoy Volante and Yeng Constantino as judges.

When the singer goes out of tune, "Jhong the Gong" (Jhong Hilario) will hit a gong that signals the contestants to stop singing. The defending champion received P25,000 while the runners up get P5,000 as consolation prize.
