After the Queen of Soul Jaya's highly talked about network transfer to ABS-CBN after almost two decades on GMA-7, her fans have been wondering if she will also be joining ABS-CBN's Sunday noontime variety show ASAP.
At a press conference held in Quezon City last August 4, Jaya admitted that when Sunday All Stars was taken off the air last year, it triggered her re-evaluate her career. This prompted her to look for a new home where she can continue doing what she really loves the most—singing.
The 45-year-old singer narrated, "Talagang yung akin, medyo na-shaken ako dahil wala akong kakantahan sa Siete, but I don't have a problem with them shifting and changing their programming. It's their program, it's their network. 'Yan naman ang ano, business 'yan, e."
PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) took the chance to ask the singer if she will be part of the Kapamilya variety show. The veteran singer noted that she's in no rush to join ASAP and is just waiting for the network's final plans for her.
Jaya revealed, "We're waiting for them to parang may niluluto sila, e. Hindi naman ako nagmamadali, we're going to have a lot of many, many days with ABS-CBN. So hindi ako nagmamadaling pumasok agad ng ASAP, although everyone is asking.
"We'll just wait for them to present sa amin kung ano talaga yung gagawin nila and then, from there, we'll let everybody know. Nagpo-post naman ako palagi, e."
TAWAG NG TANGHALAN. Jaya is now on her 4th week as a "hurado" for It's Showtime's singing competition Tawag Ng Tanghalan.
Before joining the judging panel, Jaya admitted that she already felt challenged about giving her critique to aspiring singers of different ages and genres.
She recalled, "Simula nung time na in-open sa akin yun, hindi ako makatulog tapos sabi ko ang hirap maghurado kasi napapanood ko siya, e. Iba-iba yung contestants, merong middle age, may bagets, may modern singers, may old time singers and they're mixed together. Yung ganun, hindi siya hiwalay."
Jaya admitted that she was a bit anxious about giving out comments since she doesn't want to offend any of the contestants.
She recalled, "So I was really a little frantic kasi paano kako kung meron akong masabing mali [or] meron akong ma-reveal na ikakassakit ng kalooban nila [contestants]. But na-excite ako kasi alam kong ang daming nanonood sa Showtime, ako nga nanonood, e."
The new Kapamilya talent continued, "Although I watch both noontime shows, pero nakikita ko yung programming sabi ko, 'Oh my god, nakakatakot, baka hindi ako bagay dun or whatever.' Like I said, pagpasok na pagpasok ko, tama na mahirap mag-judge."
The "Wala Na Bang Pag-ibig?" singer said she always seeks the help of her fellow judges when giving out comments to contestants.
Jaya revealed, "Ang pinag-uusapan [naming judges], 'Tulungan niyo ako ano bang comment? Kasi pag nasabi ko yung comment ko baka may masaktan.' Pare-pareho kaming ganun, we help out each other para tama yung sasabihin naming kasi ang hirap talaga, promise. Sobrang hirap maging hurado."
Aside from Jaya, other singers who are part of the juding panel include Rey Valera, Erik Santos, Yeng Constantino, K Brosas, Karla Estrada, Louie Ocampo, Billy Crawford, and many others. Jaya felt immediately at home at the Kapamilya network for having these singers with her on the judging panel.
"Biglang naging malaki na naman yung group of friend ko kasi dun palang sa pagiging hurado ko, ang dami na namin. 'Tapos mix-mix kami sa iba-ibang araw. Ang bait nilang lahat, si Louie Ocampo, oh my god! The Louie O! Akala mo lang nakakatakot siyang katrabaho pero as a hurado, normal na tao lang naman lahat kami. We get to talk about the past and what we're doing now. Masaya sila kasama, wala talagang maarte."
JAYA, THE JUDGE. Prior to this, Jaya has been tapped to judge GMA-7's singing competition Pinoy Pop Superstar hosted by Regine Velasquez which ran for three years: from 2004 to 2007.
Jaya says judging for Tawag Ng Tanghalan is totally different from past singing competitions where she served as a judge.
"Dito kasi, from all walks of life na nga siya tapos may istorya pang kaakibat," explained the former Kapuso singer.
She added, "I don't want to offend anyone, may mga bata, may middle aged, may sobrang matanda. So pag pinagsama-sama mo yang tatlong contenders na iba't iba yung pinaggalingan nila, ang hirap [kasi] walang category.
"So yung isa magbi-big band, yung isa magso-soul, yung isa magpa-pop or kundiman or whatever. Ang hirap papanalunin nung isa sa tatlo na yun na iba't iba yung opinion namin [jduges]."
Among the contestants, she looks at their star power and passion for singing in order to keep them in the competition.
Yung iba ang goal is to really make it big, makikita mo agad yun sa mata pa lang. The way they sing, the way they present themselves, the way they say yung kanilang kuwento dun sa VTR."
Still, what matters most is how the contestant performed that day. She expounded, "Ang mahirap dun, sino talaga yung deserving for the day. That's why ako, binabase ko yung judging ko just for that day. I cannot put myself na i-envision ko na pang-habang buhay na yung pinapasok nila.
"It's just for the day. If you're good today, you win today. If someone else is good that day, good luck sa 'yo today. Puwedeng manalo ka, puwedeng hindi ka manalo. So talagang mahirap mag-judge pag-ganon, walang category, walang age limit or bracket, at saka yung type of songs minsan talagang hindi mo akalain na kakantahin, e 2016 na, alam mo yung ganun.
"It's a little difficult doing this rather than let's say sa Pinoy Pop Superstar noon kasi alam ko yung… merong patutunguhan yung mga bata whether or not, they win. Most of them made it, parang ganun."
