DZMM Teleradyo hunts for aspiring comedians via "Laugh Out Loud"

"For as long as hindi below the belt ang mgajokes, kahit pa political satire 'yan, we allow that. Nasa discretion naman iyan ng mga judges," says dzMM stationmanager Angelo Palmones about the kind of jokes that they will allow during thecontest.

The cable news channel in Mega Manila, dzMM Teleradyo, holdsthe first comedy-talent search program on radio titled Laugh Out Loud (LOL). The show will feature aspiring stand-upcomedians who have hilarious, witty, and creative spiels for a radio show.

During the media junket prepared for the show held recently, station Manager Angelo Palmones explained why their radio station came up withthe idea of launching this talent search.

"Unang-unang, sa radyo ho kasi bibihira ang comedyshows. Maghapon kayong nakikinig ngradyo, pagkatapos ng maghapong pakikinig, dumaan, malungkot, may galit sa mundo, dahil ho sa maghapong komentaryo at negatibong balita na napapakinggan. So,mahalaga po ang isang comedy show.

"Pangalawa, nakita po namin 'yong may mga talents, e. Siyempre maraming may talent na nakikitanatin na dapat mabigyan ng pagkakataon. So, this is the opportunity for everyone—lalung-lalo na doon sa mganaghahangad at hindi mabigyan ng pagkakataon sa Punchline or Laffline namabigyan ng gig—ito na ho ang pagkakataon nila na magkaroon ng konting raket."

Laugh Out Loud is open to any stand-up comedian, "foras long as wala pa silang kontrata sa telebisyon, as long as hindi pa natinsila napapanood sa TV," said Palmones. "Kahit pa na sila ay professional na sa mga comedy bars, welcome iyon."

JUDGING OF LIVE PERFORMANCES. To test the contestants, the wannabecomedians who passed the audition will be performing in front of a liveaudience and judges in comedy bars suchas Punchline, Laffline, and Metro Bar.

How will the judging be conducted? Stage director-host Ahwel Paz, who is one of the judges in LaughOut Loud, answered, "Doon po sa criteria, ang natatandaan ko po, ito po aynahahati sa tatlong bahagdan: 40 percent for creativity, kung paano kayopatawanin talaga; delivery and timing 40 percent din po iyon; 'tapos mayroon dinpo 'yong mga palakpak 20 percent."

Should the contestants perform an original piece?

"Not necessarily," said Palmones, "hindi naman originalityang hanap natin dito. Kasi ang isangcomedian mabilis mag-isip. Alam niyakung paano at kailan papasok ang kanyang punchline at tuned to the topic nadini-discuss.

So, dito sa search na gagawin natin, may tatlong elementosiya. Una, 'yong pagpre-present niya ngkanyang abilidad at ng kanyang baon. Susundan ito ng isang interview. 'Tapos it will come to a bara-bara,'yong parang magbibigay ng isang scenario ang isa sa mga judges, pagkatapos,sunud-sunod na silang magsasagutan relative to the issue na binigay.

"So, hindi issue 'yong originality. Ang hinahanap natin dito ay 'yong abilidad, bilis ng pag-iisip at saka timing ng kanyang punchline."

The other members of the panel of judges are stand-upcomedian Pretty Trizsa, comedienne Kitkat, and ad executive Irene Panganiban. The show will be hosted by veteran comedian NormanMitchell.

PRIZES FOR THE WINNERS. Laugh Out Loud will have 13 episodes, which will air everySunday starting August 24 at 1 p.m. on dzMM Teleradyo (Skycable channel 26).

The grand winner will be given P100,000 cash prize, akabuhayan showcase, and a contract with dzMM.

However, Palmones said that this show is not only fordzMM. "We're coming up with this show, sabi ko nga, hindi lang para sa dzMM. Ang search na ito, ginagawa rin namin para sa 101.9 (For Life). Nangangailan din sila doon, e, kasi angdeejays ng 101.9, e, kinakailangan din ng fresh look at saka ng freshconcept. May opportunity din sa 101.9and who knows kahit sa channel two. Angdami na ngayon platforms ng ABS-CBN na pwedeng paggamitan ng ganitong mgatalents."

Laugh Out Loud will have its second audition day onAugust 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at ABS-CBN studio 8. The audition is open to anyone between 18 to 40 years old with noTV or media exposure. For details, please call 415-2272 local 5659 and 5627, Monday to Friday, from 1 p.m. to 5p.m.
