Meet Elaine Quijano, first Fil-Am to host US vice presidential debate

Elaine Quijano made history by being the first Asian-American to moderate a national debate in the United States.

Quijano is a Filipino-American news anchor who was tapped to preside over the October 4 vice presidential debate between Tim Kaine and Mike Pence.

Virginia Senator Kaine is the running mate of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton while Indiana Governor Pence is with Republican standard bearer Donald Trump.

Quijano is a second generation Fil-Am, according to fusion.net. When she gave a speech at the University of Illinois in 2009, she revealed that her mother grew up in the Philippines as the daughter of a widowed seamstress.

She currently works for CBSN, the CBS News 24-hour digital streaming network.

The debate was divided into nine time segments of 10 minutes each. As moderator, Elaine asked the opening question and each candidate had two minutes to respond.

Although she experienced several interruptions from both candidates, Elaine was praised for keeping her cool and keeping the debate on track.

In one instance, Elaine reminded the two candidates: "Gentlemen, the people cannot understand either one of you when you speak over each other. I would please ask you to wait until the other is finished."

Prior to joining CBS, the New York-based broadcast journalist used to work as a White House correspondent for CNN.

Here are some reactions of Twitter users to the way Elaine handled the debate:

A netizen even posted on Twitter: "I pick moderator Elaine Quijano as new VP #VPDebate"

Another netizen praised Elaine by posting this observation: "This moderator is best I've seen in a debate for a very long time. Tough questions, fair moderation without obsessive interjection #VPDebate"

A Twitter user admitted: "An Asian American Woman telling two old white dudes when to talk..I LOVE IT."

How about tapping Elaine Quijano as moderator for future debates?
