It came as a surprise for most fans of My Love From The Star when a newbie actor was chosen to portray Matteo Do in GMA-7's adaptation of the Koreanovela.
Alden Richards was believed to play Matteo Do when MLFTS director Bb. Joyce Bernal announced that she will be working with Alden in the "Korean-inspired" drama.
However, on December 9, 2016, it was announced that model Gil Cuerva will be the leading man of Jennylyn Mercado's Steffi Cheon.
GMA Senior Vice President for Entertainment Miss Lilybeth Rasonable is aware that fans were suggesting a lot of possible partners for Jennylyn.
She explained, "Yung lahat naman yan, up in the air until we decided na kung sino magiging partner ni Jennylyn.
"We wanted to be careful because this is such a big franchise. Matteo Do, that character, medyo mahirap siyang gawin.
"Prerogative yun ng network to find something different na idadagdag dito sa show na ito bukod kay Jennylyn."
She and other executives then decided to find a new face for the remake.
She continued: "In the end, we thought it would be fresher and something you could look forward to if we had somebody there who is new.
"At the same time, that is also part of the initiative of the network to discover new talents, same with Ivan [Dorschner] and Addy [Raj] in Meant To Be, ganito din si Gil. So yun ang mga gusto naming gawin."
Miss Lilybeth revealed this through an intimate lunch with the press last January 16 at GMA Executive Lounge where the upcoming programs of the Kapuso network were revealed.
WHAT TO EXPECT. GMA VP for Drama Miss Redgie Magno was asked if they can ensure that the Philippine adaptation of My Love From The Star will live up to the standards set by the original.
MLFTS revolves around an alien named Matteo who is stuck on Earth for 400 years. He falls in love with a human named Steffi, which is why he is torn between staying on Earth or going back to his home planet.
The Korean version is known for red carpet events, grandiose condominium units, and it even showed the spaceship of the alien Matteo.
Miss Redgie candidly admitted that there are limitations when it comes to their production.
"We will try na ganon din kalaki, but of course, we know naman na may mga limitations din tayo.
"Pero as much as possible, hindi naman tayo malalayo dun sa original version.
"Well, of course, we have our own version, si Bb. Joyce Bernal yung director, she has her own version of the execution of the scenes pero kasi we cannot totally veer away from the original story."
GMA executives did not divulge any information yet as regards to My Love From The Star as of press time.
