ASAP marked yet another milestone as it continued to celebrate 25 years of Star Magic, ABS-CBN's talent arm.
With the hashtag #ASAPSilverSunday, the party was even more magical as it culminated the two-part celebration.
In an episode that could only be described as the ultimate throwback reunion, the second part of Star Magic's silver anniversary was once again production-filled, spaced with a lot of nostalgic numbers.
Adorable vignettes of up-and-coming love teams Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia (JoshLia), Elisse and McCoy de Leon (McLisse), Elmo Magalona and Janella Salvador (ElNella), and Diego Loyzaga and Sofia Andres (SofIego) were spaced throughout the program. These served to push the theme song "Ikaw Ang Magic ng Buhay Ko" and have these stars talk about what they like about each other and their fans.
Another interesting AVP was the one that showcased Star Magic stars through the years, back when many of its superstar pillars now were still kid or tween stars.
Pinoy classic songs "Basta't Kasama Kita," "Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang," "Hanggang Ngayon," "Araw Gabi," and "Tunay na Ligaya" were performed by ASAP Pinoy's Jed Madela, Darren Espanto, Daryl Ong, and Erik Santos paired with one ASAP Pinoy Birit Queen: Jona, Morisette, Klarisse, and Angeline Quinto.
Here are highlights from the celebration of Star Magic's Silver Anniversary on the country's longest-running Sunday musical variety show, ASAP.
- The reunion of ex-couple Gerald Anderson and Kim Chiu had fans screaming at the Araneta Coliseum.
Well into the program, ASAP host Alex Gonzaga was tasked to do spiels along with Robi Domingo, Kim Chiu, and Gerald Anderson.
Alex was obviously going to go off-script when she started out, "Sa usapang reunion, gusto kita matanong Gerald, hindi ka ba masaya na nagkaroon ng reunion ang Kimerald?"
Gerald threw her a shocked look as Kim tried to maneuver the spiel back on-script, but Alex wasn't done yet, "O, di ba, sino ba ang first love mo sa Star Magic?"
At this point, Kim, Gerald's co-star in Ikaw Lang Ang Iibigin knew she had to steer the spiel back onto safer ground.
- Sarah Geronimo and John Lloyd Cruz get teased by Jolina Magdangal.
In an effort to reference the pair's highly successful movie pairing, Jolina asks John Lloyd when they will be seen together again.
John Lloyd answers quickly, "Wala na si bebe ko, iba na ibibigay namin sa inyo!" Bebe is the term of endearment that JLC and Sarah G had for their first successful movie together. Sarah G then quickly segued into the segment where boy groups who danced and sang together will be reunited.
"At number one diyan, si John Lloyd, na katabi ko ngayon," she gushes, reminding people of the time that John Lloyd was part of ASAP Kanto Boys.
- Superstars hail from Star Magic, says industry veteran.
Freddie M. Garcia, co-founder of Star Magic, had a pre-recorded video wherein he spoke of the many good things that the talent management arm has done.
He shared, "When we started it, we were looking for the star factor, the presence, and commitment, yung taong gusto niyang mangyari as a star. Iba kasi yung dedication to be a superstar, you have to be trained properly, mentored properly. The greatest legacy of Star Magic is building the superstars of today, and I believe, about 99% of the superstars are from Star Magic."
- Marvin Agustin kisses Jolina Magdangal thrice!
In Jolina's LSS segment, the crowd went wild when Marvin Agustin went on stage and started shouting, "Kamusta ka na babe, babe, san ka babe?"
Babe is their loveteam's term of endearment from their many projects together. When Marvin joined Jolina and said, "Di ba kapag nagkikita, dapat beso beso," the crowd shouted even louder.
They were joined by the love teams of McLisse, SofIego, and MayWard (Maymay Entrata and Edward Barber).
Marvin then joked, "Babe, mag-fo-forty na tayo, ayaw mo pa rin magpakiss? Or pwede na ba kitang ligawan?"
At the end of the segment, he was able to sneak in three stolen kisses, to the crowd's approval and Jolina's pretend-sungit face.
- Next generation stars get their share of the spotlight.
Seeing the young breed of stars will make you feel so much older when you still remember their parents in their heyday. It's also fun to observe these next-generation stars and see how much of their parents are in them.
Sarah G gave her rendition of "Sa Iyo Ang Pag-Ibig" while Gary V danced to the tune of "Sa Yahweh." They were joined by Julia Barretto, Elmo Magalona, Diego Loyzaga, Angelina Cruz (daughter of Cesar Montano and Sunshine Cruz), Claudia Barretto, Iñigo Pascual, Kiana Valenciano, Leila Alcasid, Arjo Atayde, Harvey Bautista (son of Quezon City Mayor Herbert Bautista), Donny Pangilinan (son of Anthony and Maricel Laxa-Pangilinan), Grae Fernandez (son of Mark Anthony Fernandez), and Janella Salvador (daughter of Jenine Desiderio).
- When queens bow to their Queen.
Kathryn Bernardo, Janella Salvador, Julia Barretto, Liza Soberano, Shaina Magdayao, and Erich Gonzales are among Star Magic's hottest leading ladies, but in a number led by Jodi Sta. Maria, they knew to take a step back and let her rule the kingdom in the grand number When Love Takes Over.
Jodi, who had her second wind of success with Be Careful With My Heart and the reboot of Pangako Sa 'Yo, shared her formula to success earlier in the show, "One element, it's really the fans, they support and inspire us, so we have to appreciate them."
- Claudine Barretto and Kristine Hermosa greet Star Magic, reminding you of their good ole days.
Claudine Barretto, who called Star Magic's Johnny Manahan as her second father and Tita Mariole as her second mother, shared in her phone message, "Star Magic made me who I am today, it is my home and family, thank you for bringing out the best in all of us."
“Happy 25th anniversary Star Magic, to this family who made me who I am today, the Star Magic that has been my second home and family, Mr. M [Johnny Manahan], my second dad, and Tita Mariole [Alberto], my second mom. Thank you for bringing out the best in all of us.
"May we all continue to believe in the magic of Star Magic and continue to shine.
"Happy 25th anniversary, Star Magic. I'll see you all soon!”
Kristine Hermosa, who became a household name in the first Pangako Sa 'Yo back in the late '90s-early 2000s, shared in her video message, "Star Magic was God's greatest instrument in my life's journey and purpose."
“Ang Star Magic ang aking naging pangalawang tahanan at pamilya since I started in the industry.
"I literally grew up with them and shared so many sweet and happy memories. Star Magic has been God's greatest instrument in my life's journey and purpose.
“Dinamayan nila ako all these years kaya I am grateful and blessed sa lahat ng taong bumubuo ng Star Magic. Mr. M and Tita Mariole, salamat sa tiwala at pagmamahal na pinaramdam niyo sa akin ng maraming taon at sa iba-ibang pagkakataon. Thank you for always encouraging and believing in me...Congratulations, Star Magic.”
8. Maymay Entrata and Edward Barber are asked: “Gusto niyo ba ang isa’t isa?”
Jolina Magdangal and Marvin Agustin were tapped to guard a booth called Cine ASAP wherein they handed out popcorn and movie tickets to young love teams.
“Nalulungkot ako,” admitted Marvin. When Jolina asked why, he answered, “Kasi patapos na yung shift natin, 'di mo pa ako kini-kiss. Kiss mo na 'ko.” Jolina looked shocked and responded by saying,” Pag-iisipan ko muna.”
Maymay Entrata and Edward Barber, more popularly known as the MayWard love team, approached them and asked for popcorn.
Marvin teased the two and asked them: “Gusto niyo ba ang isa't isa?”
Edward answered, “Oo naman. Siyempre.”
Marvin then teased them: “Sige nga. Kiss nga kayo.”
Maymay laughed and dropped some of the popcorn that she was carrying while Edward chided her by saying, “Uy natatapon! Sayang yung popcorn.”
Marvin recalled, “Ganyan din kami dati nun, e. Ganyan lang kami ng ganyan.”
He elbowed Jolina and when she got hurt, he apologized by kissing Jolina on the head.
Marvin said, “Hindi ko sinasadya” before kissing her again on the head. He kissed her a third time before telling MayWard: “Okay lang ba sa inyo na sumabay kami ng date sa inyo?”
Jolina handed them tickets and told the pair, “Itong ticket na 'to na I Do. Naku, maganda ‘yan. Tungkol ‘yan sa taong nagkatadhana. Parang kayo, di ba?”
Marvin curiously asked, “Sila na?”
Jolina ended the segment by saying, “Yes, nakatadhana sila para sa isa't isa.”
