Director Laurice Guillen admitted that she did not expect the success that Ika-6 Na Utos achieved in terms of ratings and audience reception.
In the ratings game, the afternoon series starring Sunshine Dizon and Ryza Cenon has already occupied the No. 1 slot, even beating the noontime shows Eat Bulaga and It's Showtime.
She said, "I did not expect it to be in the Top 5 TV shows including news, I didn't expect.
"Pero ako naman, pagka may binibigay na assignment sa akin that I have accepted, at nakuha ko yung concept, iniintindi ko kung anong style na palalabasin, anong style na nasa concept ng creatives and approved by management.
"So pinagbubuti ko to the extent na talagang I put all my energy in making sure na ma-achieve kung ano yung plano, kung ano yung concept and style."
Ika-6 Na Utos is Laurice Guillen's fourth show since she was tapped to direct teleseryes in GMA-7.
Her other shows include: Akin Pa Rin Ang Bukas (2013), Second Chances (2015), and Hanggang Makita Kang Muli (2016).
What made Ika-6 Na Utos different from her previous shows?
She said about this, "Wala pa naman akong show siguro na mababang mababa, lahat naman maganda naman ang ratings.
"But this one, this one is really, ang daming energy kasi ng show. At saka mas konti ang cast ko dito."
PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) had an exclusive interview with Direk Laurice after the press conference of Cinemalaya 2017 last July 13 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.
VIRAL FIGHT SCENES. Ika-6 Na Utos is known for its catfight scenes between Emma (Sunshine) and Georgia (Ryza).
Geneva, a new character played by Angelika dela Cruz, has also joined the bandwagon and recently engaged in a photocopier scene with Emma.
Emma even threw a puncher at Geneva's face!
Direk Laurice credits the show's creative team for coming up with campy yet entertaining fight scenes.
"Some of that, ideas din ng creative team. I-e-execute ko na lang kung paano.
"But of course, I have a fight instructor and I have the usual aids that I need.
"But swerte lang din na yung mga artista ko, malakas din. Susmaryosep!"
What are Direk Laurice's favorite fight scenes that she taped for the series?
With a smile, she answered, "One of my favorites is yung sa escalator. To me, grabe ang energy at saka ang movement doon sa away sa escalator! Grabe!
"When I do scenes that are action, I always get the same fight instructor that I've always had in film kasi sa akin, pareho kami ng kinoconsider.
"Sa akin number one is safety, kaya salamat na lang at so far naman e, safe naman. I always consider that."
The 70-year-old actress-filmmaker then recalled the scene where Georgia (Ryza) almost fell from a penthouse after a fight with Emma.
"There are really some far out [scenes], yun bang upakan doon sa penthouse tapos muntik nang nahulog at habang nakahawak siya sa ledge, nagda-dialogue!
"Yun ang talagang wow, paano mo ipupull off. At saka yung nag-aaway sila sa toy store, tapos yung gun!"
In a previous interview, Sunshine revealed that because of their intense fight scenes, she developed a muscle tear.
How do Sunshine and Ryza feel about shooting these scenes?
Direk Laurice said about them, "Okay naman, mga professionals naman yun.
"We just had an agreement kasi I realized na gustong-gusto ng audience kapag may ganun."
Direk Laurice believes that the empowered attitude of the wife is one reason why people watch the show.
"Kasi so far, lumalaban naman… I think one important point is yung real wife, lumalaban, hindi lang nagtitimpi.
"Pero bitin pa rin yung laban niya in the sense na hindi nahuhuli si Georgia in spite of the things that she has done. Parang kailan ba ito magkakaroon ng justice, di ba?
"So that's why the audience, everytime we have an episode at least once or twice in the week that we have na may nagsasalpukan sila, that is one way of releasing the frustrations ng audience na nag-i-identify kay Emma to release na sana makaganti man lang."
The former Film Development Council of the Philippines CEO is aware that some viewers are already saying that Emma's hardships must already end.
However, she said, "O, e, di gusto niyo tapusin na yung series?
"May direction, e. It's not one straight road. It’s a teleserye, it's a crooked road until the end."
ON BASHERS. The award-winning director, who helmed award-winning movies such as Tanging Yaman (2000) and Santa Santita (2004), also knows that the series has become a subject of bashing in social media.
"Once in a while, nakakarating sa 'kin yung sa GMA."
However, she noticed something about these comments.
"Yung mga nag-ne-negative, iisa lang ang sinasabi, iisa lang ang tono at saka yung sinasabi nila.
"So you know that it’s just one source.
"But there are also those who ano to me directly pero hindi pambabastos, kung hindi, 'Paano ba yan? Will she have justice, makukulong ba si ano? Magkakabalikan ba sila?'
"Yun yung mga sumusunod, dahil nanunuod sila."
Until when will Ika-6 Na Utos be seen on television?
She answered, "I don't know. I never know. But for now, I'm working with the assumption that we will end sometime in October with a strong possibility that it will end in a year.
"And there are those saying that it might go beyond the year."
If the show gets extended, Direk Laurice said that they are ready with more plot points for the teleserye.
"Meron siyang… nakaplot yan na hanggang for one year. Nakaplot yang ganyan.
"Pero every eight weeks, may parang it can end there or we know that it will end there already.
"And then sometime in the future, parang kung magkakaroon ng Book Two."
Ika-6 Na Utos, which is dubbed by the Kapuso network as its no. 1 Daytime drama series, airs from Mondays to Saturdays after Eat Bulaga!
