Wildflower actress Aiko Melendez feels humbled and blessed that viewers are getting hooked on their ABS-CBN series.
This translates to high ratings, allowing Wildflower to beat its rival GMA-7 program, the game show Wowowin.
In an interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) during a recent press conference, Aiko downplayed the competition between Wildflower and the game show hosted by Willie Revillame.
She said with a smile, "Actually, siguro, it's... ang safer way to say is in our timeslot, we are the highest, kami ang naghohold ng pinakamataas ng ratings, so we are blessed.
"Kami naman, hindi kami nandito para magpabagsak ng kung ano mang show, lahat sinusuportahan and it's a choice of the viewers kung sinong show ang papanuorin.
"It just so happened na ang Wildflower, it's a soap na hindi mo alam kung ano mangyayari sa susunod. Unpredictable yung twist namin so you'll keep watching it."
EMILIA ARDIENTE-TORILLO. In Wildflower, Aiko plays the kontrabida Emilia Ardiente-Torillo, the mother of Arnaldo (RK Bagatsing) who always engages in heated confrontations with Ivy Aguas (Maja).
Since the airing of the show last February, Aiko has been receiving good feedback for her portrayal of a kontrabida.
She admitted, "For a long time, hinihintay ko yung ganitong klaseng role na challenging na tatatak sa tao.
"In fact, whenever I go out, ang tawag na sa akin, Emilia, e. It's not Aiko. It's either Gov [Governor] or Emilia, so I'm very very happy na tinanggap ko yung Wildflower."
However, there was also a time when she got scared because of the impact of her character on young viewers.
The 41-year-old actress narrated, "Doon nga ako natatakot kasi I was telling them, sinundo ko yung daughter ko sa school.
"There are bunch of kids who took pictures with me saying, 'You know, when I grow up, I want to be like you.'
"Na-tense ako! Sabi ko, 'Uy, no don't, si Emilia bad. Wag niyo gagayahin.'
"Kasi I twisted yung atake ko sa pagiging kontrabida. Si Emilia is sosyal na nakakatawa na medyo maiinis ka pero maaawa ka rin sa background niya because yung longing niya sa father niya, hindi okay.
"Yung relationship rin niya sa husband niya, hindi rin okay. So naiintindihan mo rin kahit papaano yung pinangagagalingan ni Emilia."
She also admitted that playing a kontrabida role can be very hard, but as a professional actress, she does her own research.
"Ang dami kong pinapanuod ngayon na Netflix [series], kung anu-ano para malaman ko paanong atake that our audience wouldn't be bored watching us.
"In fact, ang role ng kontrabida is very very hard. Kung anong role ng bida, mas triple ang hirap ng kontrabida because you always have to keep up and you have to spice up yung atake mo sa bawat eksena."
Adding to the pressure she feels is working alongside very reputable actors such as Tirso Cruz III, who plays her father in the show.
"Super pressured ako. Kung alam lang nila akala nila madali lang ginagawa ko, no.
"It's hard to keep up when you're working with really good actors especially Tito Tirso Cruz III, Oh my God.
"Hands up ako sa kay Tito Tirso, napakagaling na artista and very giving, I've learned so much from him on how I will attack the role of Emilia.
"I'd like to give credit also to my directors Direk Raymund [Ocampo] and Direk Cathy [Camarillo] and of course, our director before, Direk Onat Diaz.
"Kasi si Direk Onat is the one ang nagconceptualize na paanong atake ang gusto naming gawin kay Emilia, kami ang umupong dalawa."
Wildflower, which also stars Sunshine Cruz, Yen Santos, Wendell Ramos, Vin Abrenica, and Joseph Marco, is now on its third season.
