Can fans look forward to a reunion project for the stars of teen series TGIS: Thank God It's Sabado?
First aired in August 1995, GMA-7's youth-oriented show produced by VIVA Television catapulted the love team of Angelu de Leon and Bobby Andrews as one of the most-followed love teams during the '90s.
The first batch included Michael Flores, Bernadette Allyson, Rica Peralejo, Ciara Sotto, Raven Villanueva, Onemig Bondoc, Jake Roxas, and Red Sternberg.
Kim delos Santos and Idelle Martinez formed the tweens in their batch.
In 1997, the older TGIS teens were tapped to star in a spin-off of the barkada show titled Growing Up. This was tagged as "The TGIS Primetime" since it aired on the primetime slot.
Though the series already ended in 1999, there are still fans clamoring for a reunion of their '90s idols.
In an exclusive interview with PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) during a recent press conference, director Mark Reyes revealed that they are planning to have a get-together to celebrate the show's 22nd anniversary.
He said, "May reunion kami, we're getting together, we have our own Viber feed, e. So we're getting together.
"Last year we had one. So this year, we'll make it a yearly thing. And Kim [delos Santos] was here. E, di namin natuloy noong nandito si Kim. Basta we're getting together pretty soon."
Kim, who has already migrated to the United States, arrived in the Philippines last August for a vacation.
Direk Mark's next revelation will bring joy and excitement to die-hard TGIS fans.
He divulged, "Meron ding plans, there are plans for a project."
However, he clarified that it won't be a sequel of the phenomenal '90s youth-oriented show.
"Pero hindi siya TGIS ha! It's the TGIS people for the project but it's not TGIS. It's our own initiative.
"It's... I don't know if it's gonna be a one-shot deal or a series for streaming."
There were many attempts in the past to bring back the TGIS cast together, but they could not be completed.
In 2001, the whole cast--except for Angelu--reunited in an episode of GMA Love Stories to show what happened to the lives of the characters two years after its last episode.
In 2012, GMA created Teen Gen, a youth-oriented series featuring the children of Angelu and Bobby's characters while depicting a continuation of their bittersweet love story.
Only Michael and Bernadette were able to do guest appearances in the show.
Despite these efforts, fans of the '90s series are still eager to see another sequel featuring the complete cast.
However, Direk Mark, who also created the iconic fantasy series Encantadia, believes that if the series does make a return, a new generation should already headline the program.
He explained, "Ganito yan, if there is something that was really worked on and cherished by the people behind it, TGIS and Encantadia are two perfect examples. There will always be a clamor for it.
"I mean, di ba nga, ngayon pa rin, ang best part ng love teams, na ano yan, Bobby-Angelu. Di mo maaalis yan. But they're getting old. So iba na dapat yung level niya.
"Kung ibabalik man ang TGIS na talagang TGIS na ganun, may bagong generation na dapat diyan like Teen Gen. Pero yung Teen Gen mga anak, e."
"Like Friends, may Friends reunion sa States. Pwedeng ituloy 'yan, pero it's hard kasi Red is out of the country, Raven is out of the country."
ROADTRIP REUNION. On September 5, some TGIS stars had a "roadtrip reunion," as shared by Angelu de Leon on her Instagram account.
Present in the reunion were Angelu, Bobby Andrews, Bernadette Allyson, and Michael Flores.
She wrote in the caption, "ATM: Roadtrip Reunion #allglorytoGod #thankyouJesus #TGIS #Roadtrip #reunion #thankgoditssabado"
According to Bernadette, they went to Tagbilaran City in Bohol.
It was not mentioned, however, if it is part of their annual reunion or if it will be an episode of GMA News and Public Affairs's program Roadtrip, which airs every Sunday on GMA.
Michael posted a throwback photo of TGIS on Instagram and asked fans for their thoughts about them reuniting. He even tagged the social media accounts of GMA-7 to encourage the creation of a project for them.
He wrote: "Thank God It's...22years!! Gusto niyo ba kami mag reunion? Calling @gmanetwork @gmadrama @gmanews Let's give the fans (#batang90s ) what they want!"
