In all, 16 Filipino TV shows and one movie earned nominations at the New York Festivals International Television & Film Awards 2018.
Ai-Ai delas Alas's movie Area (2016), which has already received several international awards, is nominated in the direction category.
The film is directed by Louie Ignacio.
In March 2017, Ai-Ai won best actress for Area at the Queens World Film Festival in New York City; in May 2017, Area won at the ASEAN International Film Festival held in Kuching, Malaysia; and in October 2017, the movie again won at the 2nd Los Angeles Philippine International Film Festival.
For its part, GMA-7 receives 12 nominations for its news and public affairs programs, including episodes of Brigada, Front Row, I-Witness, and Real Time.
Jessica Soho is also nominated as Best News Anchor for her GMA News TV program State of the Nation.
Alden Richards's documentary Alaala: A Martial Law Special earns a nomination in the Docudrama category. In this TV special, the Kapuso actor plays Kabataang Makabayan founder, activist, and human rights advocate Boni Ilagan.
Meanwhile, ABS-CBN gets four nominations for its news and current affairs shows, including the documentary Mukha: Di Ka Pasisiil, which tackled the war in Marawi.
ANC's docuseries Local Legends also earns the nod for its "Bandurria" episode.
The gala night for the 2018 TV and Film Awards will be held on April 10.
