As of May 2017, there have been 1,098 HIV cases in the Philippines, the highest number since record-keeping started in 1984. Patients are still exposed to discrimination, and many Filipinos continue to believe in fallacies surrounding the disease.
This environment encouraged GMA-7 to produce its advocacy series focusing on an HIV-positive patient, titled Hindi Ko Kayang Iwan Ka.
The show aired its pilot episode on February 26, showcasing Yasmien Kurdi’s stellar performance as a mother who learns that she’s afflicted with the virus.
Thea Balagtas (Yasmien) had a bright future ahead of her until one night changed the course of her destiny.
While out drinking with her best friend Lawrence de Leon (Martin del Rosario), she loses consciousness after a few sips of alcohol. Lawrence rapes Thea (although it has not yet been revealed, he may have infected the latter with HIV).
Her family tries to seek justice for Lawrence’s deplorable crime. A confrontation with Lawrence’s family, however, almost ends in brutal violence when his father threatens Thea’s family with a gun. The event forces the Balagtas family to give up their quest for justice.
Short on cash, Thea decides to work as a bar girl, where she meets the gentlemanly Marco Angeles (Mike Tan). Their romance blossoms but not without the protests of Marco’s difficult mother Donya Adelaida (Gina Alajar), who sharply rebukes Thea during their first meeting at a party.
In spite of his mother’s disapproval and warning that she will cut him off the family, Marco marries Thea.
Adelaida attends the wedding but continues to disapprove of the union. Referring to Thea, she tells her daughter Sofia (Ina Feleo), “I really hate her.”
