Karen Davila talks about being TOYM awardee

ABS-CBN broadcast journalist Karen Davila is included in the Ten Outstanding Young Men of 2008, as chosen by the Junior Chamber International Philippines or Philippine Jaycees, Inc.

No less than President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ang naging guest of honor ng gabing iyon.

Ani Karen, "This recognition validates my work in the field of news and broadcasting. There has been many challenges and obstacles along the way. May mga magaganda at may mga masasakit tanggapin. But all of that is part of my profession.

"Siguro nga in that sense kaya isa ako sa nabigyan ng parangal na ito. This signifies all the hard work that I have fought for.

"It's really an honor to be one of the recipients of TOYM and I do hope that I live up to this recognition. This is a symbol of the many pains that people like me has to endure in order to solidify credibility. I feel good to know that there are people who believes in what I do and will continue doing for a long time."

Nasa ika-50th year na nga ang TOYM na may reputasyon sa pagpili ng mga outstanding young Filipino men and women (ages 18 to 40) who are role models and are exemplars for society at large. It has also become an institution that recognizes countless young leaders in their respective fields.

Na-cite si Karen para sa kanyang commendable body of work sa kanyang fifteen years as a journalist on television. Kabilang na rito ay ang kanyang documentaries for The Correspondents ("Batang Preso: Children In Jail") na nakakuha ng UNICEF Child Rights Award sa Hong Kong noong 2005 at tinalo niya ang over 50 documentaries submitted by 12 countries all over Asia Pacific.

In 2004 ay na-recongize din ng same award-giving body ang kanyang documentary on "Yellow Babies (Children with Bilary Atresia)." That same year nga ay nanalo si Karen bilang Broadcast Journalist of the Year ng Rotary Club of Manila para sa kanyang fearless coverage ng Quezon landslide.

Bukod sa kanyang television and radio work (TV Patrol World, Wondermon and Pasada Sais Trenta on DZMM), may iba pang pinagkakaabalan si Karen Davila at isa na nga rito ay ang kanyang pag-devote ng time for children's education sa World Vision, ang non-government organization na tumutulong sa pagpapaaral ng mga sponsored children.

"Education is still the best gift we can give to children. Nakakalungkot lang isipin na maraming mga batang hindi nabibigyan ng pagkakataon to really experience being in school.

"That's why I lend my help to World Vision because I believe in their advocacy to help underprivileged children to get a proper education. For P600 a month, may mapag-aaral ka ng bata.
