One of the most awaited reunions in Philippine television happened last Sunday, June 13, during ABS-CBN’s musical variety show Sharon. It was the first time that former couple Sharon Cuneta and Gabby Concepcion appeared together on television ever since they separated and Gabby migrated to the U.S. in 1987.
Both of them already shot a sequence for Sharon’s 2009 movie BFF (Best Friends Forever) but they didn’t appear in the same frame together. This time, Sharon and Gabby joked with each other and sat down on the same sofa as they reminisced about the good ol’ times.
KC opened the show with the song "An Updated Version of Me" and was later joined on stage by her godmother Zsa Zsa Padilla who happens to be the best friend of the Megastar. They welcomed Gabby, who told the audience, "Noong nakaraang linggo, nandun ako sa show na Simply KC [KC’s morning show] at ngayon nandito naman ako sa Simply Sharon."
Sharon then entered the stage and positioned KC in between her and Gabby. KC joked, "Ninang huwag kang bumukod diyan. Bubukod rin ako." The daughter of Gabby and Sharon then stepped backward so Sharon and Gabby would be standing next to each other. He then went beside his former wife, prompting KC to exclaim, "Teka, mahihimatay ako...nanlalamig ako."
The members of the audience screamed for joy as the Mega family reunited in one stage.
At this point, Sharon placed her hand on Gabby’s shoulder and asked him, "Kamusta ka naman?" Gabby responded by saying, "Aba! Parang mainit ang gabi, ha! Dito sa studio, parang mainit dito."
Gabby put his arm around Sharon’s shoulder while she placed her arm behind him. "Tuwang-tuwa ako, nandito ako at magkaibigan kami," said Gabby. Sharon added, "Parang imposible, di ba?"
Zsa Zsa recalled that she was also there during another historic moment of the family: the day when KC was born. She even revealed that she has a copy of the home video.
LUKSO NG DUGO. In a VTR interview, KC recalled that 13 years ago, she took it upon herself to look for her father. "21 years old ako noon at tatlong taon na kami hindi nag-uusap at 13 years na kami hindi nagkikita. Nung time na nag-21 ako, sabi ko, kahit ano pang mangyari, kailangan kong makita ang papa ko."
She looked for the actor-turned- licensed realtor. Gabby then narrated that fateful day: "Tumawag sa akin si KC one day na nasa Amerika ako. Ang lamig-lamig ng araw na yun. Meron akong kinukuha sa kotse at nag-ring ang cell phone ko. Sinagot ko at sinabi niya, ’Hello, I’d like to speak to Gabby Concepcion?’ Parang instinct yun eh, somehow, alam ko na si KC yun eh.
"Nagtanong pa ako, sabi ko, ’Who is this please?’ Hindi niya ko narinig eh, tinanong niya uli, ’May I speak with Gabby Concepcion, please?’ Sabi ko, ’Is this my baby?’"
In the vernacular, this is known as lukso ng dugo—translated literally as "jump of blood"—the sense of connection that you get when you come face-to-face with long-lost family members.
KC continued, "Umalis ako ng Paris nung break, yung very first sem break ko. Lipad ako agad [to U.S.]."
Gabby described their meeting after many years of separation: "Ang sabi niya sa akin nung nagkita kami sa airport, ’Pa! Why do we look like each other?’"
Truly, you’ll see the bond that Gabby and KC had while they sang the theme song of their first movie titled I’ll Be There. Directed by Mario J. delos Reyes, this Star Cinema film will open on June 16, 2010.
Sharon could’t help but sing along as she watched them both while seated on the sofa. When Gabby sang the last notes of the song, Sharon quipped, "Wow, naalala pa yung tinuro ko!" He shot back, "Alam mo, I’m a good student, teacher!"
FAMILY SECRETS REVEALED. All four of them—KC, Zsa Zsa, Gabby and Sharon—then sat down on the sofa to chat and reminisce about their past. KC, who was sitting beside her mom, transferred beside Zsa Zsa to let her father sit closer to Sharon. "Namimiss ko na nga luto mo, eh," Gabby told his former wife.
In the course of their conversation, KC recalled an accident that took place when she and her father went to a beach in Anilao. Batangas. "Na-aksidente kami ni Papa! ’Baby, you want to stay longer sa beach?’ Kasi sugat-sugat ang mukha ko. May nangyari lang at pumasok ang mga bubog sa balat ko. Eight years old ako nun."
Sharon was shocked and tapped Gabby on the shoulder, and in turn, he playfully fell down on the sofa. "Ngayon ko lang nalaman ang bubog na ’yan!" she exclaimed.
KC continued her story by saying, "[He asked me], ’You want to extend three days?’ Para gumaling ang mga sugat!"
She also narrated another beach escapade involving a jet ski. "Eight years old ako at nangangarera kami ni Papa sa jetski-magagalit ka, Ma. Separate jet ski."
The former matinee idol defended himself by saying, "Wala namang lisensiya para sa jet ski. Secret ito pero she saved my life. Buti na lang, tinuruan ko siya mag-jet ski. Dapat kasi tandem kayo sa jet ski para pag may nasiraan, may sasagip sa ’yo. Eh, ang nangyari, ako yung nasiraan. Pinuntahan niya ko sa gitna ng dagat. Kung hindi niya ko sinagip, wala ako dito ngayon."
A flabbergasted Sharon merely said, "Nanlalambot ako ngayon...alam ni Lord."
NO BAD BLOOD. At this point, KC interjected that her mom did not say anything bad about Gabby when she was growing up. "Si Mama, wala siyang sinabing anything na masama about you nung lumalaki pa ako."
Gabby said gratefully, "Ang galing-galing nga, eh. Thank you very much." He then tapped Sharon on the knee.
When beepers and mobile phones were not yet popular, it was revealed how Gabby and Sharon would communicate with each other. "Si Mama nagkuwento sa akin nito," revealed KC. "Nung gumagawa pa sila ng movie ni Papa, may walkie-talkie sila, parang CB radio. Pag nag-uusap sila dun, ang code nila for ’I love you,’ 10-20! 10-20! Over!
"Tapos, nung pinanganak ako...anong oras ako pinanganak?"
Gabby shouted out, "10:20!"
Their first born child, Kristina Cassandra, was born on April 7, 1985.
To end the June 13 episode, Sharon sang "Smile" with her daughter KC.
Next Sunday, June 20, the second part of the reunion will be aired on Sharon.
