GMA-7 continues to increase its TV ratings lead in viewer-rich Mega Manila and Total Urban Luzon over its closest rival ABS-CBN, according to a report released to PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) by the corporate communications department of GMA-7. The report is based on data for September 2010 from Nielsen TV Audience Measurement.
GMA Network’s lead over rival ABS-CBN in average total-day (6AM to 12MN) audience share in Mega Manila stood at 7 percentage points in September, with GMA-7 posting 37.7% versus competition’s 30.7%. The corporate communications department attributes this huge margin to the "strong performance of its primetime and noontime programs."
Moreover, people data recorded from July to September (September 26 to 30 based on overnight ratings data) showed a decline in ABS-CBN’s shares, alongside a steady rise in GMA-7’s lead. In July, GMA-7’s lead in audience share in its bailiwick Mega Manila, which comprises 55% of the total urban TV household population in the country, was at 5.6 percentage points. GMA-7’s lead grew to 6.7 percentage points in August, and further increased to 7 percentage points in September.
The report of GMA-7 indicates that TV5 remains a far third in Mega Manila with an average audience share of only 12.9% in September.
However, TV5 claimed that it climbed to the Number 2 spot when it overtook ABS-CBN last September 18, based on AGB Mega Manila Individual Ratings. TV5 reportedly got a 24.6% audience share compared to the 21.3% of ABS-CBN. GMA-7 held the top spot with its 34% audience share.
Four Kapuso shows figured strongly in the list of top five overall programs in Mega Manila in September 2010. These programs include Survivor Philippines Celebrity Showdown hosted by Richard Gutierrez, Grazilda led by Glaiza de Castro, primetime newscast 24 Oras, and Ilumina starring by Rhian Ramos, Jackie Rice, and Aljur Abrenica.
In Urban Luzon, where 77% of the total urban TV household population is found, GMA-7’s lead also made a steady rise in the last three months. From a slim 0.4 percentage point-lead in July, GMA-7’s lead over ABS-CBN in average total day audience share went up to 2.4 percentage points in August, and even higher at 3.1 in September. The Kapuso Network registered an average total day audience share of 36.4% in Urban Luzon in September vis-à-vis ABS-CBN’s 33.3%.
The report also indicated that 16 of the top 30 overall programs in Urban Luzon were from GMA-7.
Meanwhile, GMA Network continues to narrow the gap in the national survey as ABS-CBN’s lead in audience share in July was cut by almost half at the quarter’s close. From a gap of 8.2 percentage points in July, GMA-7 trimmed ABS-CBN’s lead to 5.4 in August. In September, ABS-CBN’s lead went down further to only 4.8 percentage points, with GMA-7 posting an average total day audience share at 33.5% versus ABS-CBN’s 38.3%.
From October 1 to 3, ABS-CBN’s national survey lead was further trimmed down to a mere 1.2 percentage points, as GMA-7 registered a 32.7% average audience share in National Urban Philippines versus ABS-CBN’s 33.9%.
