Independent senatorial candidate Richard Gomez is reportedly backing out from his senatorial bid due to lack of funds?

An unconfirmed report has reached PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) that actor Richard Gomez has plans of withdrawing his candidacy for senator. His announcement, according to a PEP source, will happen tonight, March 29, the last day of filing of candidacy for the May 14 elections.

The report says that Richard is seriously considering to back out from his senatorial bid due to alleged deficit in his campaign fund. In addition, the matinee idol does not have the amount needed to cover all scopes of a national campaign. Richard is running as an independent candidate.

However, the PEP source reveals that Richard is currently contemplating on the following options: 1) continue with his plan to run for senator? 2) go for a lower post, say a seat in Congress? 3) back out totally and prepare for the 2010 elections?

It can be recalled that Goma also ran as party-list nominee under Mamamayan Ayaw sa Droga (MAD) in the 2001 elections. Although MAD won in that election, Richard failed to take a seat in Congress when the Supreme Court disqualified the group.

The PEP source adds that Richard is scheduled to make a visit to the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office tonight, but as of 7:10 in the evening, the actor has not showed up.
