Joyce, once a self-confessed lakwatsera, claims she's forgone get-togethers with friends to stay home and take care of Liam.(YES! May 2002 issue)

Film director and award-winning editor Joyce Bernal is also a doting mother! She gave birth to baby Liam last January 12, 2002. Her pregnancy had not been difficult. In fact, Joyce managed to shoot and edit two full-length features—the Aga Muhlach-Regine Velasquez starrer Pangako, Ikaw Lang, and the Sharon Cuneta-Robin Padilla reunion Pagdating ng Panahon—through her term.

But giving birth admittedly gave her problems. She had prepared psychologically for a normal delivery, but ended up with a Caesarean section, not to mention an operation of her urinary tract. "Six hours ako sa operating room!" Joyce exclaims.

But all's well that ends well. Liam is gifted with good health and a happy disposition. The little girl hardly cries. Says Joyce, "Ang dali alagaan. Hindi iyakin. Iiyak lang siya kapag gutom."

And now that this bundle of joy has learned to crawl, she is all over the place. "Napakalikot! Kaya niya ngang gumapang mula sa bahay hanggang Megamall!" is how the articulate Joyce describes Liam's kinetic energy.
Each time she looks at her baby, she says, she is overcome by unexplainable bliss. "Masarap... Hindi ko alam hung man galing ang high."

The director, who is known for hit romantic movies, says her love for her baby was instantaneous. "Parang may love agad na matindi. Hindi na-develop. Hindi na kinailangan ng happy moments. Hindi na nagkaroon ng music video," she says, obviously picking elements from her films to describe the scenario.

Because of this love, things have changed, if subtly. In the past, when holed up in a post-production studio, she herself says: "Tumatagal nga ako nang hindi umuuwi ng bahay." Nowadays, the 32-year-old mom (she's now 37 by the way) confesses to getting tired. "Palagay ko yun yung way ng katawan ko, at ng baby ko, para sabihin sa akin na tama na, na kailangan ko nang umuwi at magpahinga."

Also nowadays, whenever Joyce spots a mother with her kid at the mall, she sees things differently: "Mas naa-appreciate ko yung bonding ng mag-ina. Kung noon tinitingnan ko lang sila, ngayon nakikita ko na sila talaga."
