Cory Aquino’s good health tops daughter Kris’s 2008 wish list

"What a pleasure it has been," said Kris Aquino about her experience working with veteran actress Susan Roces and the entire cast of Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara. The TV host-actress brought her 8-month old son, Baby James, during the special press preview of the horror television series yesterday, January 4, at the ABS-CBN Studio 1.

Actress-TV host Kris Aquino recently experienced the scare of her life. Unknown to many, Kris's mother, former president Corazon "Cory" Aquino, was rushed to the hospital just as everyone was busy celebrating Christmas.

"Christmas eve, we spent it sa ER [emergency room] ng Medical City. Doon kami inabutan ng Pasko," narrated Kris to the entertainment media yesterday, January 4, minutes before two episodes of the television remake of the classic horror flick, Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara, was shown at the ABS-CBN Studio 1.

According to Kris, the sight of her mother in a hospital bed engulfed her with fear and sadness. "First time ko matakot," confided Kris. "Kasi ako sanay akong ma-ospital pero ang mom ko never. So the fact na her BP [blood pressure] went up to 220 over 110 tapos she was having trouble breathing."

The health scare, as narrated by Kris, occurred while the family was in the middle of a picture-taking revelry.

"Noong picture taking namin, kini-carry niya si baby James [Kris's son with cager husband James Yap] tapos parang nahirapan siya, tapos she said sumisikip ‘yong dibdib niya so natakot talaga kami. And then after that nagkaroon siya ng fever, nag-flu na umabot ng 39 [degrees] ang fever niya, tapos in-asthma."

The former president, who rose to power in 1986 on the strength of the historic bloodless EDSA Revolution, was home in time for 2008's grand entrance, although her condition remains delicate.

"She's okay but she said she wasn't 100 percent back yet," Kris pointed out.

The actress-TV host acknowledged that even before the hospitalization her mother was not as strong as she was in the past.

"My mom is turning 75 sa birthday niya [on January 25] so lahat kami talaga, ‘yon lang, maging healthy ulit ang Mommy ko like the way she was."

DOMESTIC BLISS. During the special screening, Kris brought Baby James who was obviously enthralled with all the lights, cameras, and microphones in front of his celebrity mom.

"Happy," Kris said about her 8-month old son. "Sinama ko siya kasi noong whole vacation we had the chance to be together everyday, tapos yesterday first time na naiwan siya [in the house] so talagang sad na sad siya."

Despite the controversies that hounded her early last year, Kris said that 2007 was a very good year for her, all in all. Flashing a smile, she said, "We are so blessed."

Career-wise, she is glad to be included in the cast of Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara—a film considered by critics as one of the best among local horror flicks.

Aside from the story and plot itself, Kris is very proud to be working with fellow good actors, most notably Ms. Susan Roces. The widow of Fernando Poe Jr., who is dubbed as the Queen of Philippine Movies, was one of the lead stars in the original movie version screened in 1974.

"With Tita Susan and with Albert [Martinez], I feel na sobrang gaganda ng mga eksena talaga. It's something to look forward to and it's a beautiful way to start the year," Kris said proudly.

Patayin sa Sindak si Barbara is the first installment of ABS-CBN's Sineserye Presents: The Susan Roces Collection. The three-week horror series will premiere this coming Monday, January 7, as part of the Kapamilya network's stable of Primetime Bida programs.

Kris will also be seen in the Philippine version of the iconic U.S. game show, Wheel of Fortune, which airs starting January 14.

"I'm super excited kasi when we were still living in the States pinapanood ko na, e," she recalled. Beaming enthusiastically, Kris continued, "So parang feeling ko, oh my God, ako na ngayon!"
